What is Angkak?
Angkak is one type of brown rice from China which is fermented with yeast Monascus purpureus. This traditional medicine is red and has been trusted for years by doctors in Indonesia to cure dengue. Not only used to cure diseases, angkak can also be used as a natural flavor enhancer and food coloring that gives red color.
Angkak can be given to DHF patients in various ways, ranging from capsules, Angkak tea, and foods that have been mixed with Angkak. However, how can Angkak cure dengue fever?

You may be accustomed to bringing guava fruit when visiting DHF patients. However, in addition to guava fruit, another thing that is also believed to help cure dengue is angkak. Yes, angkak has been traditionally trusted by Indonesians as a traditional medicine to cure dengue. However, is it true that angkak can cure dengue?
There have been many various studies conducted to prove whether Angkak can cure DHF patients and how they work. A study from IPB in 2012 showed that administration of Angkak capsules could increase platelets in white rats made thrombocytopenia (low platelet blood levels).
As we know that DHF patients have low platelet levels which make the disease worse. With the provision of Angkak which can help increase platelet levels, then DHF patients may recover faster.
This was also reinforced by research from Airlangga University in 2013 conducted in two groups of DHF patients, each group numbering 15 people. One group was given Angkak capsules and another was not given Angkak. The result is decreased thrombopoietin (TPO) levels in DHF patients.
TPO is one of the factors responsible for platelet formation, where this TPO is high in DHF patients. TPO levels in DHF patients are inversely proportional to platelet levels. Thus, a decrease in TPO levels in DHF patients is a good thing for the recovery of DHF patients.
In this study also mentioned that Angkak can increase thrombosis in DHF patients. This may occur because Angkak can increase platelet formation in the spinal cord (Trisnadjaja, 2006) and Angkak has anti-inflammatory effects from metabolites, monakolin K, ankaflavin, and monascin (Lin, et al., 2011).
Conclusion
From these two studies it can be concluded that Angkak can help cure DHF patients by helping increase platelet levels in DHF patients. The combination of administration of Angkak and Guava in DHF patients can also help DHF patients recover quickly.
Research published by the IOSR Journal of Pharmacy in 2015 has shown that white mice given angkak and guava juice had the highest increase in platelets. The combination of Angkak and Guava leaf extract can also increase the number of red blood cells and blood hematocrit values.
But before using Angkak to treat dengue fever, always consult a doctor first. Don't forget to protect yourself and your family with health insurance so that all health problems including DHF can be immediately handled by the medical team without the need to delay due to financial limitations.
