Medical Video: How People in Different Physical States See the World

You may be confused when the doctor asks to explain the vision problem you are experiencing. Almost all visual disturbances are complained of as blurry or shadowy vision. In fact, some cases may be double vision. Let's find out how to distinguish between blurred vision and blurred vision with double vision. Because the two eye problems have different types of treatment.

What is the difference between double vision and shaded vision?

Shaded view

Shaded or blurred vision occurs when the object you are looking at is not clear. For example, when you see a giant billboard on the road. You can see the shape of the board but cannot distinguish the image or read the writing clearly. The edges of the font or image on the billboard appear to blend with one another, and with the background.

There are various conditions that can cause blurred vision. Among others are :

  • Refractive disorders of the cornea such as minus eyes, plus eyes, cylindrical eyes; or more serious abnormalities such as corneal swelling.
  • Disorders of the lens of the eye, often due to cataracts.
  • Bleeding to the eye (subconjunctival hemorrhage).
  • Disorders of the retinal layer, the layer that captures images and is passed on to the brain.
  • Disorders of the macula or optic nerve.

Multiple views

As with shadows (blurry vision), multiple views are conditions that occur when the object you are observing is seen as two twin objects. Multiple views can occur only when one eye is open, when both eyes are open.

An example is when you see a billboard on the road. You can still clearly see the shape of the board along with all the images and writing, but what you see are two identical billboards stacked together. Of course you will also have difficulty reading the writing clearly.

Abnormalities that cause double vision can be divided into:

Double vision with one eye (monocular diplopia)

Most cases of monocular diplopia are caused by abnormalities in the media of refraction, such as in the cornea or macula (center of vision).

Double vision due to this condition can improve with the installation of a pinhole (eye patch with 1 hole in the middle).

Double vision with both eyes (binocular diplopia)

Binocular diplopia is generally caused by a disruption in the eyeball muscle or on the nerves in the eyeball muscle, such as the result of a tumor in the brain that suppresses the nerve muscle nerve pathway. This condition is common in patients with myasthenia gravis.

Different symptoms, different ways to treat it

Each condition has a different disease severity with different treatment methods.

Refractive disorders like minus, plus, or cylinder eyes can be overcome by using prescription glasses or contact lenses, or with LASIK surgery. While visual abnormalities involving problems in the eye nerve pathways will require more complicated examination and treatment, depending on the cause.

That's why you need to regularly check eye health at least once a year and immediately consult a doctor when vision begins to have problems to help detect the cause earlier.
