Medical Video: What Happens Few Seconds Before You Die?

People say you will be able to see flashbacks of your life in the final seconds before death. Your entire past is replayed before your eyes until you die. Is it true?

What happens before the moments of death?

It is difficult to ascertain what happens before the moment of death, because asking a dead person is like you talking to a wall. But many people report that they almost died. Take for example, Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon who claimed to have talked to God while "stopping" into the afterlife. But without a lot of legitimate evidence that supports the truth of this near-death experience, the best guess that researchers have to date is to classify it with experiences of hallucinations or dreams.

Now departing from these reports, the research team from Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center in Israel tried to deepen about the phenomenon of near death and flashbacks of memories before the moments of death. The researcher interviewed 271 people who had escaped death, and those who had been declared dead by doctors but could somehow come back to life. The findings reveal that many "survivors of death" who experience an unusual recap of memory before the death seconds are completely different from what we thought so far.

Based on study participants' reports, flashbacks of near-death memory generally do not occur chronologically (eg memories from us are small until the last breath seconds). What happened was that memories during life were taken and played back randomly. Interestingly, the memories they witnessed can be mixed together. In addition, many participants who reported experiencing memories playback before the moments of death, but from the perspective of others. The study also found that many flashbacks of memory they witnessed can feel very real, and very emotional.

Why does this flashback happen?

The researchers say that the phenomenon of flashbacks when you almost die can be caused by parts of the brain that store memories such as prefrontal, medial temporal, and parietal cortex. These three brain regions are not susceptible to shrinkage or oxygen and blood loss during a serious injury, which means that memory processing is one of the brain's last dead functions. This shows that a re-demonstration of the life story takes place in the cognitive system, which may be further clarified when the brain is in extreme physical and psychological stress.

In other words, when your past memories are played back before your eyes, you are not actually reacting because of fear of the threat of death and trying as hard as possible to hold on to the last remnants of life. it's just a more extreme and concentrated version of the memory withdrawal process that you normally do every day of your life. Thus, flashbacks of memory before the actual seconds of death are things that can happen to many people.

Previous research has suggested that the phenomenon of flashbacks of dying memory is more common among people who contain high concentrations of carbon dioxide in the breath and in their blood vessels after a heart attack.
