As children grow, their curiosity about food will increase. However, you need to be careful in sorting out foods that may be consumed by toddlers. Remember, not all foods are safe for consumption by children of a certain age. Some foods can cause your child to choke to vomit.

Here are some foods that you should not give to toddlers.

1. Low-fat milk

Most toddlers still need high fat and calorie intake from milk for development and growth. When your child turns 2 (and if he doesn't have growth problems), you can start giving low-fat milk. However, if your child is at risk of obesity or heart problems, the doctor will recommend giving low-fat milk before 2 years.

2. Large-cut foods

Foods that are larger than peas can get stuck in the throat of a toddler. Meat, sausages, cheese, and vegetables such as carrots, celery and long beans must be thinly shredded, or boiled until soft, and cut into small pieces first. Cut fruits, such as grapes, cherry tomatoes, and melon balls, into four parts before serving.

3. Small but hard food

Hard candy, chewing cough medicines, whole beans, and popcorn can cause your child to choke. Grains may be too small to cause your child to choke, but these foods can get stuck in the throat and block the respiratory pathways which are at risk of causing infection.

4. Food is soft and sticky

Avoid giving gum, marshmallows and gelatin or jelly candy that can get stuck in your child's throat.

5. Peanut butter

Be careful when serving peanut butter in large portions, because it will be difficult for your child to swallow it. Serve peanut butter as a thin spread for your little biscuits or sandwiches. Avoid giving coarse ground peanut butter (chunky peanut butter) if the child is still too small.

Tips for avoiding choking

To avoid your toddler choking on food, don't get toddlers to eat in the car when the car is running. It's hard to keep an eye on your little one when you are driving a car. Car shocks will also make your child more prone to choking.

If you use topical drugs for the problem of growing your child's teeth, keep an eye on your baby during treatment because the effects of the drug can make the child's throat feel numb and interfere with the reflexes of swallowing it.
