Medical Video: Vaping in front of my mom for the 1st time..
You already know that smoking is very dangerous for everyone's health, including pregnant women. Smoking during pregnancy certainly does not only have an impact on the mother, but also has an impact on the baby's prospective baby. Chemicals that enter the mother's body can penetrate the placenta so that it can affect fetal growth and development.
Pregnant women smoke can cause babies born prematurely, babies born with low weight (LBW), or even can cause miscarriage. However, not limited to that, smoking during pregnancy can also affect the development of a baby's vision.
Pregnant women have an impact on the baby's vision
Cigarette smoke contains more than 4000 chemicals, including bad chemicals, such as nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, and at least 60 other compounds that cause cancer. These chemicals enter your body when you smoke or breathe cigarette smoke (passive smoking). Then, these chemicals enter your bloodstream and your fetus. So, do not be surprised if a lot of bad consequences caused if you smoke while pregnant.
One result of pregnant women smoking is impaired vision in the fetus or child later in life. The study, published in the 2015 Acta Ophthalmologica journal, has proven this. The study shows that pregnant women who smoke (both actively and passively) are associated with an increased risk of vision problems in their children. Children born to smokers have a higher risk of strabismus, refractive errors, and retinopathy.
Retinopathy can cause the blood vessels of the eye to grow abnormally and eventually can cause the child to lose sight. Premature babies because mothers smoke during pregnancy also have a higher risk of retinopathy, which can lead to blindness.
The study also concluded that exposure to secondhand smoke in the fetus in the womb during pregnancy is a risk factor for future vision problems in children. Sections of vision, such as the muscles in the eyeball (intraocular) and retinal nerve are more affected than other parts.
Other research also reinforces this. The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that pregnant women who smoke have a 26% greater chance of having a baby with strabismus compared to pregnant women who don't smoke. The more cigarettes smoked during pregnancy, the higher the risk of the baby having vision problems.
What is strabismus?
Strabismus, better known as a squint eye, describes several different eye conditions that cause the eyes to appear uneven. There are about 30 different nerve and muscle conditions that can cause squinting. In this condition, your eyes cannot be aligned and focus on one thing. As many as 2-3% of children have this vision problem. Special care is needed to cure the condition of the child's eyes that are squinted.
Stay away from cigarettes while pregnant
There is no good thing about smoking, especially when you are pregnant. There are many consequences that you and your baby can receive if you smoke during pregnancy, even if you only smoke cigarette smoke (become passive smokers). For this reason, it is highly recommended for pregnant women not to smoke or breathe cigarette smoke.
If you smoke, ideally, you should stop smoking before you become pregnant. The earlier you stop smoking, the better it will be for the health of you and your future baby. If your partner or person around you often smokes, you can ask them not to smoke in front of you or to stay away when they are smoking. Apply a healthy lifestyle and leave your bad lifestyle for the sake of your future baby's health.
