Medical Video: I'm 8wks. Why was it hard to find my baby's heartbeat by transvaginal ultrasound? Will I miscarry?

There is no other happiness for prospective moms and dads besides hearing their fetus's heartbeat first. The fetal heartbeat can be heard if the mother is conducting an ultrasound examination or ultrasonography. However, not all parents will immediately hear the fetal heartbeat when doing ultrasound for the first time. Is that normal? Or is it a sign that the mother's womb is problematic? Then like a normal baby's heartbeat?

What is a normal fetal heart rate like?

Babies begin to form the circulatory system - including the heart - when the fetus enters the age around the third week or the same as the fifth week of gestation. At that time, the heart of the fetus will beat first.

This heartbeat can be known when you do an ultrasound examination. Basically, ultrasound in the first trimester (first week to twelve) needs to be done to find out:

  • Heartbeat in the fetus
  • Knowing the age of the fetus and can be used to estimate the time of delivery
  • Check whether the fetus is twin or not
  • Know whether the fetus is growing and developing properly

Normally, the fetal heart rate in the first six weeks is around 100 beats per minute and increases when the fetus has entered the age of nine weeks, up to 180 beats per minute.

The fetal heart rate is weak, is it a bad sign?

A study says that a weak fetal heartbeat can be one sign that your pregnancy is experiencing interference. The study found that fetuses whose heart rate is less than 100 beats per minute at week 6 of pregnancy are at risk of dying in the womb.

Fetal death in the womb that occurs in the first trimester or even the early weeks of pregnancy, usually caused by a genetic disorder in the fetus and makes it unable to survive.

If your fetus has a weak heart rate or less than 100 beats per minute, then your pregnancy needs to be under the supervision of a doctor and must carry out regular checks.

However, not all cases of a weak heartbeat in the fetus will end in a miscarriage. In some cases, the fetal heart rate will return to normal as it develops and grows. Therefore, you must take care of your pregnancy properly, avoid stress and often see a doctor.
