You may have heard the old saying, "Don't judge book by its cover" This saying has a meaning which means do not judge someone from the outward appearance or on the first impression. In fact, many people do the opposite. They tend to judge a person's character at the first meeting. However, is this method accurate according to psychological observations? Come on, find out the answer in the following review.

Is first impression important?

Every day you get to know new people you meet in the office, the neighborhood you live in, or on the road. As often as that, you draw conclusions about the character of each person you meet.

If you see someone using clothes, shoes, or bags that are popular, you will definitely draw conclusions that the person is very fashionable. Likewise when you see someone who reads novels, books or newspapers on the train, you will assume that the person likes to read. Actually, is your judgment on first impressions important?

The saying does direct you to not determine someone's character from his appearance, especially at the first meeting. However, most people tend to judge someone at the first meeting, then revise their assessment at the next meeting.

To assess how a person's personality, senses and instincts will gather information. Starting from seeing how looks, gestures, expressions and hearing tones or ways of speaking. This impression at the first meeting is recorded stronger in your brain than the meeting afterwards.

"It tends to attract conclusions about someone in a split second, basically it doesn't always lead to negative things," Vivian Zayas, PhD, a lecturer in psychology at Cornell University, was quoted as saying on the Health page.

Assessing someone from the first meeting can help you to determine a dangerous situation and also determine the match between you and that person. You must experience it, for example when avoiding someone you think is not good or selecting prospective workers during an interview session.

Reporting from the BBC, Katherine Rogers from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga and Jeremy Biesanz from the University of British Columbia conducted research on thousands of students. Students are asked to chat with strangers for three minutes or watch videos of someone they don't know at the same time interval. Then, assess how the personality of the person you are talking to or the person being observed.

The results show that there are some students who can assess personality very accurately, some do not. Researchers argue that the accuracy of the assessment is influenced by the ability in a person to gather information from what they see and hear, and draw conclusions in accordance with the information obtained.

This shows that assessing the personality of others at the first meeting is not always accurate. It depends on a person's ability to assess, the duration of interaction with each other, and how the person shows himself in front of other people.

That is why in job interviews, police, or other institutions, personality assessment teams are selected people who do have the ability and accuracy in assessing a person's personality.
