Medical Video: Can You Be Friends With Your Ex? | Relationship and Dating Advice

Many people treat ex-girlfriends like strangers after the relationship is over. Even if you can, just throw your face away when you are on the road. There are many underlying reasons. Either because I am still sad or upset over the flames of romance, or just because I have successfully moved on and don't want to be trapped in old memories anymore. But actually, is it possible to be friends with ex-girlfriends?

Making friends with ex-girlfriends, isn't that right?

Often we assume that the relationship that ends is a failure. However, making friends with ex-girlfriends is not impossible. A study published by the journal Personal Relationships can find friendship possible if you and him break up well.

Even one study published by the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, if your relationship was first started with friendship, it is not impossible to be friends again after the relationship failed in the middle of the road.

According to Rebecca Griffith, a psychologist from the University of Kansas in the United States, previous research reported that 60 percent of couples who had dropped out still had friendships.

Even so, re-establishing friendships with the ex may be a little difficult for certain cases. If your relationship ends because of an affair, jealousy, or a matter of trust, it might be almost impossible to be friends again. But for example you and himself can finally end the conflict peacefully, returning to friends is possible if there are no more thorns in the flesh.

Why are friends with girlfriends?

A study published in a journalAmerican Psychological Association find four reasons why someone still chooses to be friends with his ex-boyfriend. The study also looked at whether the reasons for this friendship were related to positive feelings such as making feeling safe and happy, or vice versa ie negative feelings that make you depressed, jealous and broken hearted.

First reason is security. Someone who has broken up does not want to lose emotional support, advice, and trust from people who were very close to him.

Second reason is being friends with the ex (husband) is practical, maybe also for financial reasons or children.

Third reason is respecting the feelings of the former. Someone wants to be polite and does not want to hurt the feelings of others, therefore they usually keep on making friends.

Fourth reason is because there are still feelings that have not disappeared. This reason is the most frequent reason.

Friends with ex-girlfriends, will they last?

The study also looked at the relationship between the reason someone stays friends with their ex and how long the friendship will last, and how positively it will work. Based on the four reasons mentioned above, two relate to emotional needs, namely security and unresolved feelings. Two more reasons relate to non-emotional needs, namely practical and maintaining the feelings of ex-girlfriends.

Researchers report that non-emotional reasons tend to lead to long-lasting and lasting friendships. Relationships that lead to positive feelings, which make someone feel safe and happy tend to be more developed than those that cause negative feelings.

Uniquely, the reason for being friends is because they still have feelings that are associated with negative feelings, usually lasting a long time. In a 2016 study, some people admitted that they still wanted to be friends with their ex because they still had feelings and could not imagine if their ex-boyfriend was with someone else.
