What is Le Fort 1 osteotomy?
Le Fort 1 osteotomy is an operation to change the position of the maxilla so that your teeth can become even. There are limitations to using braces to tidy up teeth. Sometimes teeth can't neatly tidy without improving the position of your upper jaw.
When do I need to undergo Le Fort 1 osteotomy?

What do I need to know before undergoing Le Fort 1 osteotomy?
You might look different from what you imagined after having a Le Fort operation. Changes to the face can last up to 1 year after surgery. Transfer to the facial bone can change the shape of your nose or lips. Your bones can crack in other parts. Your teeth can be damaged or you will have difficulty using your teeth. It rarely happens, but the bones in your head can crack, causing spinal fluid to come out through your ears and nose. Your dentist will install braces to tidy up your teeth, but you will find it difficult to bite properly. You will need a permanent wire on the back of your teeth or use a barrier at night to keep your teeth in place.

What should I do before undergoing Le Fort 1 osteotomy?
Discuss with your doctor about medications you are taking, allergies, or other health conditions before undergoing surgery. Before surgery, arrange a meeting with your anesthetist. It is important for you to follow the doctor's instructions to stop eating or drinking before surgery. You will be given instructions before surgery, such as whether you are allowed to eat before surgery. In general, you must fast 6 hours before the procedure begins. You may be allowed to drink fluids, such as coffee, a few hours before surgery.
What is the process of Le Fort 1 osteotomy?
Surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts for about 1 hour. The surgeon will make an incision in the inside of your mouth, above your upper teeth. The surgeon will use special equipment to separate the upper jaw that holds your teeth. The position of the jaw is repaired using plates and screws.
What should I do after undergoing Le Fort 1 osteonomy?
You are allowed to go home after 1 to 3 days. Swelling will usually subside after the third week. Exercising can help you return to your normal activities. Consult your doctor first. Eat refined foods for 4 to 6 weeks, then slowly start consuming solid foods if you can chew comfortably. You can return to work after 2 to 4 weeks, depending on your level of operation and type of activity.
Complications
What complications can occur?
You may experience blood loss during surgery and need a blood transfusion. You may also experience pain, infection, bleeding or skin damage caused by surgery. Metal plates and screws installed during operation can become loose, shift or cause infection. If an infection occurs, you need to have another operation to fix it. You can also feel the hardware under your skin. Your bones may be difficult to recover correctly or even return to the position before surgery.
You can minimize the risk of complications by following instructions from a doctor before surgery, such as fasting and stopping taking certain drugs.
