Medical Video: SurgeonCam Septoplasty | Closed deviated septum repair from the surgeon's perspective

Definition

What is nasal septal deviation?

Septum is the cartilage and bone in the nose which divides the nostril into two parts. The septum is usually straight but deviations can occur, which can cause nasal congestion.

When do I need to undergo a septoplasty?

If you experience symptoms - such as difficulty breathing with your nose - that affect your quality of life, you can consider surgery to repair the septum. After surgery, your septum will return straight and the symptoms of a blocked nose will disappear.

You can be a suitable candidate for septoplasty, if:

● Your facial growth is complete.

● You are in good health

● You don't smoke

● You have a positive outlook and realistic goals for improving your appearance

Prevention & warning

In general, the results of septoplasty are usually stable, but the cartilage and tissues can shift or change shape over time. Nose tissue is relatively stable for 3 to 6 months. However, changes can occur up to more than 1 year after surgery. Most people who undergo a septoplasty experience reduced symptoms such as difficulty breathing due to septal deviation. Results from septoplasty can vary. Some people feel symptoms continue after surgery and perform a revised septoplasty operation to repair the nasal septum again.

Are there alternatives other than septoplasty?

Septoplasty is the only reliable way to improve conditions. Septum cannot be straightened out without surgery.

Process

What should I do before undergoing a septoplasty?

Before scheduling a septoplasty, you need to visit your surgeon to discuss the advantages and risks of septoplasty. Your nose may also be photographed from several sides. The doctor will use the photos as discussion material before surgery and as a reference during surgery and after surgery. Discuss with your doctor about your expectations for surgery. The doctor will explain to you what these operations can or cannot do. You will be given instructions before surgery, such as whether to eat before surgery. In general, you must fast 6 hours before the procedure begins. You may be allowed to drink fluids, such as coffee, a few hours before surgery.

What is the process of a septoplasty?

Surgery is done through your nostrils and will not produce facial scars. Surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia and lasts for about 45 minutes. The surgeon will make an incision in the lining of your nose. The part of the cartilage and the bent bone will be returned to a straight position.

What should I do after undergoing a septoplasty?

Usually you will stay in the hospital or maybe you can go home the same day. You need to rest and stay away from the crowd for 2 weeks. This is to avoid flu, which can lead to infection. Exercising can help you return to your normal activities. Consult your doctor first. In general, patients will recover completely and be able to return to activities. However, the deviation can occur again due to the cartilage slowly returning to its original position.

Complications

What complications can occur?

Like other procedures, there are several possible risks for septoplasty, such as bleeding, infection and reaction to anesthesia. Possible risks specific to septoplasty include:

● symptoms such as nasal congestion continue after surgery

● bleeding

● deformation of the nose

● opening of the septum (perforation of the septum)

● reduced olfactory ability

● blood collection in the nasal cavity (septal hematoma)

● a temporary numb sensation in the gums and upper teeth.

Discuss with your doctor about the risks before undergoing surgery.
