Botox and fillers are beauty treatments that are both given by injection. Both are equally treatments that do not involve surgery. Even though both are injected, these two procedures are very different. Let's identify the difference between filler and botox so you don't choose the wrong procedure.
What are the different fillers and botox?
Before deciding which treatment to choose, first know what the different fillers and botox are.
The purpose of the procedure
Botox injections are a skin care that is relied on to deal with wrinkles. Usually, wrinkles arise from everyday facial expressions, from smiling, frowning, to crying.
Botox works by inhibiting nerve signals in the muscles and making them more relaxed. That way, the surface of the skin becomes smoother and tighter.
While the filler or often called dermal filler aims to fill the soft tissue that is under the surface of the skin to increase volume on certain parts of the face. Usually used to increase volume on the cheeks, lips, and around the mouth thinning due to aging.
Material used
Botox uses a protein from Clostridium Botolinum bacteria which will be injected into the skin. While fillers use several ingredients that have been approved by U.S Food and Drug Administration or BPOM equivalent in Indonesia, such as:
- Calcium hydroxupalatite (Radiesse), a mineral-like compound found in bones.
- Hyaluronic acid, an ingredient found in fluids and tissues in the body to increase skin elasticity.
- Polylactic acid, a material that can stimulate the skin to produce more collagen.
- Polyalkylimide, in the form of a transparent gel.
- Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA), a semi-permanent filler
Endurance
Botox injections usually last 3 to 4 months after treatment. So you need to repeat the injection often enough to maintain the results.
While the filler effect depends on the material used. However, it usually has longer results compared to Botox. The time range is around 4 months to 2 years. However, just like Botox you still need further treatment to maintain the desired results.
Side effects
Botox has various side effects such as bruises on the skin that are injected, headaches, drooping eyelids, and eyes that experience redness and irritation.
While fillers have side effects that tend to be more like allergic reactions, bruises, infections, itching, numbness, redness, scarring, to injury.
