You may often buy liquid milk in the packaging. Well, do you always finish the contents after opening or the milk that has been opened in packaging often does not run out? Approximately safe or not, yes, drink milk whose packaging has long been opened? Here is the answer from a nutritionist.

Storage of liquid milk in the package

Liquid milk is divided into various types, depending on the processing process. There is raw milk (raw milk), pasteurized milk, and UHT milk. The durability of each type of milk is of course different. Milk with the longest shelf life is UHT milk, followed by pasteurized milk, and finally raw milk.

The good news is that most packaged milk has been processed using pasteurization or UHT, no longer raw. So packaged milk is usually more durable than raw milk which is milked directly from cattle without sterilization.

Before the packaging is opened, pasteurized milk can usually last a week to two weeks after production. While UHT milk can be stored longer if the packaging has not been opened, which is up to several months. Note that milk should be stored in a cool place (ideally in a refrigerator), away from direct sunlight, and not damp or wet.

Can you drink the remaining liquid milk whose packaging is open?

You may have bought a box of liquid cow's milk and drank it for a week, not immediately spent. Or your child asks to drink packaged milk, but then does not finish it and asks for the remaining milk to be stored for the night or even tomorrow.

Well, safe or not drinking milk whose packaging is open depends on the type of milk and how it is stored. Here's the explanation.

Pasteurized milk

Pasteurized milk has indeed been processed to be free of bad bacteria and safe for consumption. However, if the packaging has been opened, the milk is also vulnerable to being exposed to more bad bacteria (recontamination). Especially if after opening the milk does not immediately put into the refrigerator again.

According to the Foods and Drugs Administration in the United States, which is equivalent to the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration in Indonesia, we recommend that you do not consume pasteurized milk if it is left open outside the refrigerator for 1-2 hours, depending on the air temperature at that time. The hotter the weather and the air, the shorter the resistance of pasteurized milk that has been opened.

Whereas if the milk is stored in the refrigerator after it is opened, you should still use it immediately. Don't leave it for days, let alone a week. Because the nutrition of milk that has been opened and not immediately consumed is no longer optimal.

UHT milk

Slightly different from pasteurized milk, UHT milk has a longer shelf life. After first opening, UHT milk can be stored in the refrigerator until about 4 days afterwards. It is still safe for consumption and its nutrients are still awake.

However, the same as pasteurized milk, if it has been opened and not directly stored in the refrigerator within 1-2 hours, do not consume it again.

What is the sign that the milk is stale and not suitable for drinking?

drink milk at dawn

An expert in nutrition science, Dr. Matthew Lantz Blaylock, Ph.D., spoke about this when met at Pacific Place, South Jakarta on Friday (14/09). According to him, milk should be drunk and spent immediately. Furthermore, Dr. Matthew explained, "Open liquid milk can be contaminated with bad bacteria that produce gas, sour taste, or discoloration."

This bacterial contamination, said Dr. Matthew, who made stale milk and the taste changed. Milk that is not drinkable will usually make bloated, sour, and the color will turn yellowish or the texture thickens.

Dr. Matthew also explained that maybe if the changes are not too obvious, milk is still viable even though the nutrition is not optimal when it is still fresh. However, Dr. Matthew warns that if milk has been opened too long and is not stored in the refrigerator, or if you are in doubt about its quality, it is better to just throw it away immediately.
