Labor induction will usually be offered by a doctor if the baby is not born even though the day of birth is expected. However, before you decide to do induction for childbirth, there are a number of questions that you should ask the doctor first. Anything, huh?
1. Why should I be induced?
This question is the first thing you should ask your doctor. By asking this question, you will automatically know for sure the health condition of you and the fetus.
The reason is, some mothers who carry out induction give birth to have problems with their pregnancy or certain complications during labor. Then, do you really need labor induction?
Next is the condition of pregnant women who are recommended to do labor induction:
- Your delivery schedule has exceeded 40 weeks.
- if the membranes rupture earlier, more than 24 hours before labor begins.
- if you or your baby has a health condition that threatens and gives birth more quickly and safely for both of them like the condition of your placenta that is not functioning properly as a result the amniotic fluid becomes small, and the presence of preeclampsia.
2. Are there other actions before induction?
Generally, there are a series of medical tests or other actions taken before labor induction is performed. Now, it's your job to ask in detail what will be done along with the preparation and risk of the action.
So, not only prepare yourself for induction, but you already know other actions to be taken. Usually, the doctor asks you to do a biophysical profile test or a non stress test (NST) test. The medical test is carried out to determine the condition and response of the baby.
3. What induction method do I need?
You need to know clearly what induction you need, because this method is done based on the condition of the body. If the cervix has not softened or opened, the sign is that you are not ready to give birth.
In this condition, the doctor can use drugs or mechanical methods to make the cervix completely ready.
If your labor does not start, you will be given an oxytocin infusion. This drug (often called the Pitocin brand name) contains an artificial hormone oxytocin which is produced by the body naturally during spontaneous labor.
Ask in detail what stages you will pass later when doing induction.
4. What should be done if the induction doesn't work?
Induction of childbirth is not always successful. If this is the case, your obstetrician or midwife will first observe the condition of the mother and baby she is carrying out.
Chances are the doctor will offer another method of induction of childbirth. Or, if not successful the caesarean delivery will be performed.
You will be given the opportunity to discuss this situation with the obstetrician who handles your delivery.
5. What does it feel like to be induced?
This question can indeed make some of you afraid. However, you can better predict what will happen to yourself.
Indeed, the induction of labor is more painful than the onset of naturally occurring labor.
But usually women who carry out induction give birth to an epidural injection. Epidural injections are special injections in the back of the body to reduce pain
The choice of pain reliever during labor is not limited to pregnant women who have induced childbirth.
Make sure to return to your obstetrician about handling the pain that you will feel later. Like what medication will be given, how many times the drug is given, and so on.
