In 2010, WHO reported that there were 18.5 million cesarean births per year. Caesarean section is an alternative way the medical team can do if the mother and baby experience complications so that it is difficult to give birth in a normal way. However, until now vaginal delivery is the best way if the mother and child are in normal and healthy condition.

Same with other operations, caesarean section actually has its own risks, because that is an alternative step. Some studies have compared the two existing labor processes, and one of them states that the mode of delivery affects the number of good baby bacteria that can protect it from various infections.

How to give birth will affect the number of good bacteria in babies

Did you know that a newborn baby can't actually produce antibodies because the immune system is not perfect? Therefore, newborns are very susceptible to various infectious diseases that might attack. Antibodies will be produced by the child when he has passed the age of 6 months, and his immune system will mature when he is 1 year old. Then how can a newborn be protected from various viral and bacterial infections?

One way that can protect a newborn baby is a good bacteria that is in the digestive system. Actually everyone has good bacteria in their intestines and these bacteria have an important role in building and strengthening the immune system. Several studies have proven that good bacteria in the intestine greatly affect the development of white blood cells that function as an army of body guards from various foreign substances that enter. Therefore, having good bacteria is important, especially in newborns because they do not have their own immune system. But where do these good bacteria get?

What is the function of good bacteria in the baby's body?

In the human intestine there are at least 100 trillion cells that contain various types of bacteria, and it is estimated that the number of bacteria is 10 times more than the number of genes in the human body. Not only plays a role in helping the immune system, good bacteria in the intestine are also responsible for the production of various vitamins and minerals from digestive results.

At first, the experts stated that in the digestive system of the fetus, no good bacteria had grown. After the fetus is born and grows into a baby, the number of good bacteria will increase. Therefore, the researchers then considered that maybe the method of giving birth to a baby affects the initial amount of bacteria that grows in the baby's intestine.

What is the effect on caesarean babies?

Research conducted at the University of Puerto Rico and the University of Colorado examined two groups of babies born in two different ways, namely normally and by caesarean section. From the study it was known that a group of babies born by caesarean section were more susceptible to allergies and asthma compared to babies born normally or through the vagina. In addition, skin infections are also found which are more common in babies born with caesarean.

If it is concluded from the results of the research mentioned earlier, babies born through normal labor have more good bacteria than babies born by caesarean section. This happens because during normal labor, babies are exposed to or exposed to the vagina and maternal intestinal bacteria that are important in the early growth of good bacteria. Whereas in infants born through a caesarean section, these contacts do not occur which then does not exist which triggers the initial growth of the baby's good bacteria. Some researchers even state that the type of bacteria that grows in the two groups of babies will be different, depending on the method of birth.

Babies born through normal labor have more types of bacteria Lactobacillus, where this type of bacteria is good for digestion and can help the immune system fight various foreign substances that enter. While babies born from caesarean section actually have more types of bacteria Staphylococcusand Acinetobacter, namely the type of bacteria that causes more infection in the body.

Not only that, atopic infectious diseases are often found in groups of babies born with caesarean section from those born normally. Therefore it is important to know whether your labor is indeed necessary by having a caesarean section or not. If indeed the condition of the mother and fetus is healthy, it is better to carry out normal labor.
