Get to know gynecomastia in men

Gynecomastia is an abnormal condition of breast enlargement in men. Although men and women have breast glands, in terms of their size they are different. A woman's breasts will enlarge after entering puberty, while men do not. This condition can occur in newborn boys, boys during puberty, and older men.

This breast enlargement is not caused by excess fat due to being overweight. Rather it appears because of the presence of additional breast tissue. So even if the person who has this condition has lost weight, the tissue in his breast will not decrease.

The appearance of gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance between sexual hormones, namely testosterone and estrogen. Women tend to have more estrogen, while men have more testosterone. However, men with gynecomastia have a higher estrogen hormone so that the size of the breasts becomes larger.

In addition, the use of certain drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants, anabolic steroids and other drugs can trigger gynecomastia.

It turns out that the cause of gynecomastia is not only limited to the use of certain drugs, but also essential oils. Reporting from Health Line, a study conducted by J. In this study three boys were found who had gynecomastia due to exposure to lavender oil and tea tree oil. This condition is most likely due to an endocrine system disorder in producing hormones. All three patients tended to use lavender and oil products tea tree oil on the body directly and repeatedly, not mixed with water.

The chemicals contained in these essential oils are estrogenic and antiandrogenic, which can cause estrogen levels to be higher. This condition can increase the risk of boys having breast enlargement. Some lavender oils and tea oil trees that are likely to interfere with hormones include:

  • eucalyptol
  • 4-terpineol
  • dipentene / limonene
  • alpha terpineol
  • linalyl acetate
  • linalool

So, parents must choose and understand the side effects of any product used by the child. In addition to disrupting hormones, the possibility of other side effects that commonly occur is triggering asthma and allergies in children.

Gynecomastia is actually not a serious problem. However, it can affect the child's mentality, such as losing self-confidence in shame about his body condition. This certainly will not be good for growth and development.

Immediately do a health check if the child has breast swelling, nipples and areola (a dark area surrounding the nipple) that slowly buds and often complains of pain in one or both breasts.
