Definition

What is abscess surgery?

An abscess is a collection of pus surrounded by tissue walls. An abscess occurs when your body tries to control an infection. This causes the lump to be painful and can make you feel unwell.

You can get abscesses anywhere in your body.

When do I need to have an abscess surgery?

You may need surgery to remove the abscess or remove pus if you have an abscess larger than 1 cm or an abscess that continues to grow and becomes more painful.

You should not have an abscess after surgery. Surgery must prevent serious complications that can be caused by an abscess.

Prevention & warning

What should I know before doing an abscess surgery?

If your abscess is small (less than 1cm in diameter), you can treat it yourself at home. Apply warm compresses in the area for 30 minutes, 4 times a day, should be able to help.

You must not try to remove pus by squeezing it. This will push the infected material deeper into the tissue.

Do not put a needle or other sharp instrument in the middle of the abscess because you can injure the blood vessels below it, or even make the infection more scattered.

Process

What should I do before an abscess surgery?

Small abscesses can be dried under local anesthesia but usually require general anesthesia. It's important to follow the doctor's instructions about when to stop eating and drinking before surgery.

What is the process of abscess surgery?

Surgery usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. Your surgeon will make an incision in your skin at the location of the abscess. After pus is removed, the cavity needs to be healed from the bottom up so that the openings on your skin will be left open. If the cavity is deep enough, your surgeon will place an antiseptic in it.

What should I do after an abscess surgery?

Most people feel better after the abscess is dried.

If you are still experiencing pain, your doctor may prescribe pain relieving pills to use at home for the next 1-2 days.

You must follow carefully every instruction your doctor gives.

Your doctor may allow you to open a used surgical dressing yourself with instructions on the best way to do this. May include soaking or rinsing. In addition, you should report any fever, redness, swelling, or pain that is increasing to your doctor immediately.

If you have questions relating to the process of this test, consult your doctor for a better understanding.
