It seems we will find it easier for people who are busy with their gadgets than reading books.It is undeniable, in this era of increasingly sophisticated technology, people become more digital than things that are still in print.

This is supported by a survey conducted by Nielsen Consumer & Media View in the second quarter of 2016 in 11 cities in Indonesia which revealed that, of the 17,000 respondents aged 10-19 years, only 9% still read printed books. 97 percent prefer to watch television, 81 percent choose the internet and 10 percent watch pay television.

Reading printed books further improves the quality of one's sleep than digital books

Research conducted by the Harvard Medical School in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences revealed that the light produced by digital books has a role in the difficulty of sleeping of the respondents. Even though poor quality sleep has an impact on increasing risk factors for cardiovascular disease and metabolic diseases such as; obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

Research was conducted by gathering 12 respondents to be examined in a laboratory for 2 weeks, to study their sleep patterns using an approach Bedtime Reading. InThe first 5 days, the respondents were asked to read printed books before their bedtime, which was then followed by reading digital books 5 days later.

This pattern was successful in reducing respondents' blood pressure on each test and reducing the sleep hormone melatonin of the respondents after they read digital books. It also increases the time they usually need to sleep, so they will feel more exhausted the next morning.

Data from the National Sleep Foundation also informed that there were 53% of parents who reported that their children's sleep quality was "better". But the decrease in percentage occurs when parents start allowing their children to keep on turning on their gadgets when they enter bedtime. Only 27% of parents reported the quality of their child's "good" sleep. Though quality sleep is the key to a healthy body and mind.

Which is healthier for brain performance?

A study revealed that in 5 minutes, a person would divide his time between completing a task pursued by a deadline, check e-mail, chat with some friends, and monitor their social media. This will be different when you are immersed in the storyline of a book. Your attention will of course only focus on the story in the book.

This was supported by a study conducted in 2014, which revealed that printed book readers were better able to retell in full, to the smallest detail of books they had read, compared to digital book readers.
