You may often experience sudden forgetfulness. Either suddenly forgot where to put the cellphone, forgot the name of the person who had just been introduced yesterday, or walked into the kitchen but suddenly confused what to do there. Too often forgetting can indeed indicate memory disorders. But, forgetting within reasonable limits can actually make the brain smarter. How come?

Why can we forget?

Your brain works as a network that communicates with each other at all times. "Forgetting" can occur because there is a pause in communication between networks, which interferes with your ability to focus.

When a person experiences a disorder, either in the form of a ring or other distraction, a person's ability to remember will decrease. And when you try to remember something, your brain will form a new network to help you remember the thing you forgot about it.

Forgot to be able to make the brain smarter

The prefrontal cortex, located behind the forehead, is a part of the brain that plays a role in regulating cognition and controlling memory according to your goals. In this area, the memory you have will be changed in two directions, which is to be stronger or weaker.

The weaker memory is the reason you will experience the thing called forgetting. And the unique fact is, according to a study published in the Journal of Neuron, forgetting something is normal and can make you smarter.

The study states that, the purpose of your memory forgetting insignificant details is so that your brain can make more optimal decisions, by maintaining important information and releasing what is considered less important.

The forgetful process usually occurs because old memory is replaced by new memory. This is because these new brain cells form in the region of the brain's hippocampus which is associated with learning new things. These new cells will overwrite the old memory and make it difficult to access. It is this exchange of old and new memories that can help you adjust to new situations, and make the right decisions.

But you don't need to worry, because even though the brain forgets old memories, the brain can still remember the big picture in the past that can give you the ability to learn from previous experience and apply it better to the current situation.

Too often forget it still needs to be watched out

So, if you occasionally forget to put things, things you've just read, or people you've just met, don't force your brain to work too hard to remember. Because that might be a sign that your memory system is doing what it is supposed to do, and that is normal. However, if you experience forgetting too often and excessively, then you need to consult a doctor because this might mean there is a disturbance in your brain's memory.
