Medical Video: Benefits of a Sitz Bath and How to Use It
Warm water baths have been done to relax and refresh the body, especially when it's cold. However, it turns out that a warm bath can also help cleanse the genital area. The warm bath is meant by soaking the genital area in warm water, or called the sitz bath.
What is a sitz bath?
The Sitz bath is the treatment of the buttocks and perineum, which is the space between the rectum (the inside of the anus) and the vulva (the outside of the vagina) in the woman or the testicles in men. This treatment is also known as sitting soak or soak the buttocks. In addition to cleaning the genital area, the sitz bath is a procedure that can help relieve itching or pain in the buttocks and genital area.
You can take a sitz bath in the bath or with a plastic kit placed on the toilet at home (see picture above). This kit is a round, shallow container that is often equipped with a plastic bag that has a pipe or a long hose at the end. This bag can be filled with warm water and used to fill the tub safely through a hose.
This one-size container is larger than a standard toilet seat so that it is easily installed in the toilet seat to allow you to stay seated while enjoying the sitz bath treatment. This kit is available at several pharmacies and medical equipment stores.
What is the use of the sitz bath?
Sitz bath is a treatment intended to maintain the cleanliness of the anus and genital area, reduce inflammation and pain due to hemorrhoids (hemorrhoid), while helping to heal wounds in the genital and vaginal areas after childbirth.
Soaking in warm water (lukewarm, not hot water) can help speed up the healing process by increasing blood flow to this area. Sitz bath does not cure your condition, but it can reduce irritation and discomfort.
This treatment is usually used as home remedies for the following:
- Anal fissures, or small tears in the skin that line the anal canal
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Hemorrhoids (hemorrhoid or hemorrhoids)
- Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate)
- After normal (vaginal) delivery
Bathing in warm water can reduce pain, pain, irritation, and inflammation, but you may still need other treatments. Therefore, consult with your doctor before undergoing this treatment.
Sitz bath stages (warm bath)
1. Sitz bath in the bathtub
Make sure the bathtub is clean. Clean the bath by mixing 2 teaspoons of bleach with half a gallon of water. Rub the bath and rinse thoroughly. The bathtub is ready for use for a warm bath (sitz bath).
Following are the steps:
- Fill the bathtub with enough warm water (so that your genital area can be submerged). The water used must be warm, not hot water. You can add drugs that might be recommended by your doctor.
- If the water temperature is comfortable enough for you, soak your genital area for 15-20 minutes. Bend your knees or maybe let your feet dangle over the side of the bathtub to avoid your feet from the soaking water.
- When done, gently wipe the part of the buttocks that is soaked dry, but don't rub it hard.
- Don't forget to clean your bathtub again as before.
2. Sitz bath while sitting on the toilet
Rinse the plastic kit with clean water before use. If it's clean, you can follow the following steps.
- Place the sitz toiletries on the toilet seat.
- Make sure the kit won't shift.
- You can pour warm water before you sit down, or by using a plastic bag and hose to fill the kit with water after you sit down. Water must be deep enough to soak your genital area and your buttocks.
- Soak for 15-20 minutes. If you use a plastic bag, you can add warm water when the water is cold. You do not need to worry if later the water in the kit will overflow, because most sitz equipment has holes.
- When done, gently wipe the part of the buttocks that is soaked dry, but don't rub it hard.
- Don't forget to clean the kit again as before.
Kits sold usually include instructions for use and how to clean them. If your kit is not equipped with instructions, clean it in the same way when cleaning your bathtub or asking the pharmacist.
