Why is it important to get tested for HIV if you have active TB?

What is the relationship between TB and HIV?
The relationship between the two diseases is related to the immune system which is responsible for fighting infection. HIV is a virus that can weaken the body's immunity (AIDS). However, you may not immediately feel the symptoms of HIV / AIDS because this disease has not attacked your body quite badly. Therefore, you don't realize that you have this disease.
When exposed to HIV, your immune system will weaken so that the bacteria that causes TB that enter the body become active. This causes the body difficulty in attacking tuberculosis bacteria. So, TB attacks can actually be one of the symptoms of a hidden HIV infection.
When should I have an HIV test?
If you suffer from TB that does not go away for a long time, you are advised to get an HIV test as soon as possible. Because the TB that never heals can be caused by immune disorders due to HIV infection so that the body is unable to fight the bacteria that cause TB.

What treatment should I do if I am HIV positive?
Treatment of TB in HIV patients must be done immediately because the TB treatment category is not affected by the patient's HIV status. Giving antiretroviral (ARVs) can be started after TB treatment (between 2 to 8 weeks). There are two conditions that occur in TB-HIV treatment:
1. Treatment of TB that has not received ARV treatment
TB treatment can be started immediately if the patient has not received ARV treatment. Continue TB treatment if the patient has been given OAT until tolerance is reached. After that, ARV treatment was given.
2. Treatment of TB that is currently on ARV treatment
Treatment of TB in patients on ARV treatment should be planned by trained TB-HIV officers in hospitals. The main reason for being carried out by trained officers is the possibility of drug interactions (rifampicin with several classes of ARVs) immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS), and failed ARV treatment.
