Based on 2013 Ministry of Health data, it is known that cervical cancer or cervical cancer ranks second highest cause of death in women in Indonesia after breast cancer. One way to prevent the disease is to provide HPV vaccination early. What is an HPV vaccine and why is vaccination important? Know the answers in this article.

What is the HPV vaccine?

HPV vaccine is a vaccine to prevent transmission of diseases caused by the HPV virus (Human Papilloma Virus) The HPV virus can attack men and women primarily through contact or sexual relations.

HPV infection in women can cause abnormal cell growth in the cervix that can develop into cervical cancer, genital warts, vulvar and vaginal cancers. As for men, the HPV virus can cause genital warts, anal cancer and penile cancer.

Reported by the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), in Indonesia there are 2 types of HPV vaccines in circulation, namely bivalent and quadrivalent. Bivalent contains 2 types of HPV virus (16 and 18) which can prevent cervical cancer. While quadrivalent contains 4 types of HPV virus (6, 11, 16, and 18) that can prevent cancer servicing at once genital warts or genital warts.

The earlier the HPV vaccination, the higher the effectiveness of the vaccine work

The HPV vaccine is known to be able to prevent viral infections that cause cancer of the cervix and genital warts, but this drug works best if given before the infection occurs. That's why, the American Cancer Society recommends carrying out the HPV vaccine starting early.

Girls and boys are advised to get this vaccine from the age of 9 or 10 years.

The age range is considered ideal for girls and boys to receive the HPV vaccine because their immune response to the vaccine is in the best condition.

Not only that, HPV vaccination will be more effective given before someone is sexually active, so that vaccination in pre-adolescence is considered more appropriate.

Remember, once you are infected with a virus, the vaccine will not work effectively, or it may not work at all. Therefore, if you are already sexually active, do a Pap smear for checking, then, if the results are negative, immediately vaccinate HPV as early as possible to provide a more optimal protective effect.

Even so, no matter how old you are, immediately get HPV vaccination

The HPV vaccine will indeed work more effectively if given as early as possible. However, all adults of any age, whether they have had sexual relations or those who have not, should immediately take HPV vaccination if they have never previously been vaccinated. This is because of the possibility that you have not been infected with HPV from a previous sexual relationship.

In addition, even if you have been infected with one of these viruses, for example, have experienced genital warts due to HPV 6 or 11, the HPV vaccine will provide protection against HPV 16 and 18. Vaccines should be considered, for women who are sexually active must take a test PAP smear first before being vaccinated. A Pap smear is an examination to see the development of cancer cells that are not abnormal in the cells lining the cervix.

If the pap smear results are normal, you can immediately take HPV vaccination. Whereas if the results are not normal, the doctor will do a follow-up examination such as a biopsy or other invasive examination to ensure the occurrence of malignancy around the cervix.

Procedure for giving HPV vaccine

Giving the HPV vaccine to children and adults is different. Giving the HPV vaccine to children is recommended twice. The second dose can be given after 6 months to one year later. Whereas in adulthood, the HPV vaccine is given three times. The second dose is given in the first / second month and the third dose in the sixth month.

In general, the HPV vaccine has been proven to be safe. This is based on data collected since the vaccine was first launched until 2015, careful clinical trials by the FDA and CDC show if the HPV vaccine is safe and effective. On the basis of these results, in the United States, HPV vaccines remain recommended and used as routine vaccinations.

However, it's a good idea to consult first with your doctor regarding this vaccination. This vaccine is already available in Indonesia in several clinics or hospitals or the private practice of doctors who provide this vaccine service.
