What is called a swollen breast is if there is enlargement in one or both breasts, compared to the size of the breast usually. Breast swelling may also be accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, lumps, changes in nipples, and fluid coming out of the nipple.
Swollen breasts are usually normal physiological processes such as those seen at puberty, before menstruation, or during pregnancy. However, this condition may also be a symptom of a medical disorder.
Causes of swollen breasts that often occur
1. Puberty
Puberty is the first time you have a problem with your growing breasts. Swollen breasts are one sign of puberty in girls. Puberty occurs when a woman's body begins to produce female hormones high.
Girls usually experience breast development or swelling between the ages of 7 and 13 years, although some girls may experience it earlier or later. When girls enter puberty, tissue that forms in their breasts causes a flat area around the nipple to enlarge, and the breast looks swollen.
2. Symptoms of menstruation
Most women experience changes in their breasts before or during the menstrual cycle. The breasts often become painful and swollen, feeling heavy and painful before menstruation begins. This is caused by an increase in the hormone estrogen and progesterone for a month. This increase in the hormone progesterone triggers the growth of the mammary gland.
3. Pregnant
Swollen breasts are one of the first signs that women notice when pregnant. Changes in the breast can be started from 1 to 2 weeks after conception.
4. Breastfeeding
If you breastfeed your child, then you will also experience breast swelling. This is caused by milk production in the breast. Sometimes, babies who suck on breasts can cause temporary swelling, so you don't need to worry.
5. Breast lumps
Sometimes, pain in the breast caused by benign lumps in the breast. This lump can form during the breastfeeding process. The lump may also be a cyst and not an alarming condition. Lumps in the breast should always be evaluated by a doctor
6. Breast infections
Breast infection can occur due to injury, breastfeeding and unclean habits. Signs that are seen if you have a breast infection are redness in the nipples and painful breasts.
7. Lymphatic infections
The lymphatic system drains blood from outside the blood vessels to all tissues in the body. If the breast node swells due to infection, the surrounding area becomes red and pain too. You should contact your doctor as soon as possible if there is a lymphatic infection because it can be fatal if left untreated.
8. Mastitis
Mastitis is an infection caused by bacteria and can cause inflammation around the nipple, even to fever. Your breasts will feel sore and feel hot to the touch. If this happens, the doctor needs to be contacted and will often prescribe antibiotics.
9. Breast fat necrosis
After surgery or a wound, a lump can occur in the breast. This lump is caused by bruised tissue and is called breast fat necrosis. This lump is benign and does not cause breast cancer. However, this can cause pain and pain in the breast.
10. Breast cancer
If you experience chronic and severe breast pain, contact your doctor immediately. Swollen breasts accompanied by severe pain, may be a symptom of breast cancer. Other signs are pain in the upper arm, pain in the nipple, and lumps in the breast.
