Medical Video: I Decided to Sleep for 4 Hours a Day, See What Happened

Traffic accidents are the fourth leading cause of death in Indonesia, according to Riskesdas data in 2007. Can you guess what caused it? Yes! Drowsiness while driving is one of the most common causes of traffic accidents. Lack of sleep will blunt the ability of the brain to focus and concentrate on seeing the chaotic streets. Calm down ... If coffee is not effective, there are still many ways to get rid of sleepiness while driving that you can do while in the car.

How to get rid of sleepiness when stuck in traffic

When the sleeping flowers begin to bloom behind your eyelids, let's refresh the body with these tricks.

1. Leave the car and walk for a while

Especially during long trips, for example when going home, don't force to continue driving if you are exhausted. It doesn't hurt to step aside for a moment on the shoulder or rest area closest to stretch the body.

Also try to get rid of this sleepiness when you are stuck in traffic that makes you sick. Get out of the car (don't forget to lock it first!) And walk for a while.

A study led by Robert Thayer, PhD, a lecturer at California State University showed that just a short walk can pump more oxygen into the blood vessels leading to the brain and muscles. Walking for 5-10 minutes can increase stamina for the next 2 hours.

2. Joget while listening to songs

If the eyes are heavy but the road conditions do not allow you to get out of the car, try installing the song. Choose the rhythmic one upbeat, dance,or rock-n-roll and tighten the volume. No need to be ashamed to dance hard whileheadbanging following the beat of the music.

Well instead of hurting to die of lice on the road, you should prepareplaylist selected songs that can help refresh the mind when stuck. So, you don't have to bother looking for the right song or jumping to the next song.

Remember, choose a genre of music that can make you move and excited, don't choose a song that makes you even more sleepy.

3. Gymnastics in a car

Now while accompanied by music encouragement, you just move your body so that blood circulation becomes more smooth. Gymnastics don't have to be done while standing up, how come!

If you are stuck in traffic or a red light intersection that is long enough, try this while sitting as a way to get rid of sleepiness when driving:

Chest stretch

Position your seat more upright and cross your hands in front of your chest. Then swing up to the back of the arm, as shown above. Then, push your hands back a little while leaning slightly down. Hold this position for a few seconds, then return to the starting position.

Continue with the opposite direction, which is swinging both hands directly behind and cross behind your back. Lean your body forward. Hold this position for a few seconds, then return to the beginning.

While doing this stretch, don't forget to catch your breath.

Neck stretch

With an upright sitting position, raise your left hand above your head to touch your right ear. Then, tilt your head to the right as shown above and hold for 10 seconds. Return the head to the starting position.

Then, change the position of the hand to the opposite, and tilt your head to the left while holding it for 10 seconds. Return to the beginning again. Bend your head down (but don't look down), and hold 10 seconds. Finally, keep your head up and hold 10 seconds.

Leg stretch

This stretch may be a little easier for passengers or car drivers to do matic that doesn't need to keep on stepping on the pedal.

The trick, place your right foot on the knee of your left leg. Then while leaning forward, press the right ankle down. Release it, and press down again. Repeat this movement by replacing the left foot.

For the driver of a manual car, it's good to wait for the right moment to stretch this one so as not to break your concentration.

Be careful on the road and hopefully get to the destination!
