What is subconjunctival bleeding?
Subconjunctival hemorrhage is bleeding from a blood vessel called the conjunctiva that fills the space in the front eyeball.
This is different from eye irritation or commonly called conjunctivitis, which occurs due to widening of the blood vessels of the eye which is generally caused by infection or allergies.
What causes eye bleeding?
Subconjunctival bleeding can be caused by a variety of conditions, such as trauma, other diseases, or it can also occur spontaneously.
Some of the most common causes of subconjunctival bleeding are:
- Pressure in the body that suddenly rises due to straining, coughing, lifting heavy loads, or high air pressure.

Both conjunctivitis (eye irritation) and subconjunctival bleeding indeed both cause red eyes, but the symptoms in both are different.
In subconjunctival bleeding, the patient will not feel eye pain. Even vision will not be disturbed. Even patients can not feel any disturbance in the eye.
Complaints actually usually come from other people who see the patient's eyes, or when the patient is mirrored, because the appearance that may look terrible, in the form of eyes that look very red and look like really bleeding. Whereas if the red eye is due to conjunctivitis, aka irritation, usually the patient will feel pain in the eyes, impaired vision, or itching. Symptoms of conjunctivitis itself vary, depending on the cause, whether due to viruses, bacteria, or due to allergies, or irritant ingredients.
In general, people with conjunctivitis will complain of symptoms such as a sandy sensation in the eyes, itching or heat in the eyes, tears that come out excessively or continuously, the presence of tahik eyes or belek, sometimes swelling in the eye area, and redness that usually covers the entire the white part of the eye.
How to treat it?
Most cases of subconjunctival bleeding can heal on their own without treatment. Depending on how large the bleeding is, the recovery process may take several days to several weeks.
While waiting, you might want to use artificial tear drops to soothe the uncomfortable sensations you feel in the blushing eye. However, tear drops or generic eye drops are not intended forrepair broken blood vessels.
Be sure not to rub your eyes. This can increase the risk of recurrence of bleeding, and the longer it heals.
