Whereas in severe dengue fever, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause serious bleeding, sudden drop in blood pressure (in shock), and death.

Treatment for dengue fever that can be done at home

If you or your family is infected with the dengue virus, then taking medication at home to replace hospital care can be an alternative to rapid recovery and reduce symptoms. This is because there is no specific treatment for DHF, most patients usually recover within 2 weeks.

If you or your family has symptoms of mild dengue fever, it's good to do the following as an initial treatment to prevent it from getting worse:

1. Consuming large amounts of fluids

Dengue patients as much as possible provide adequate fluid intake. From water to fruit juice, it should be consumed by patients. This is intended to prevent dehydration due to fever, and help reduce fever.

In addition, consuming lots of water also helps relieve symptoms such as muscle cramps and headaches because both arise as a result dehydration. Water will also help remove excess toxins in the body to be released through urine.

2. Taking fever and pain relievers

Paracetamol can be an option to relieve pain and reduce fever. Check with your doctor to find out which drugs should be consumed.

3. Eating guava and easy-to-digest healthy foods

Doctors usually recommend eating easy-to-digest foods such as boiled foods, green vegetables and fruits. One fruit that has been known to be useful for treating dengue fever is guava. Guava contains vitamin C which can help speed up the formation of new platelets.

In patients with dengue fever, platelets in the body are usually below the normal threshold. Guava contains trombinol which can stimulate trombopoietin more actively, so that it can help the body produce more platelets. For that, consuming guava can be an effective way to help improve it again.

In addition, guava is rich in quercetin, a natural chemical that can be found in various types of fruits and vegetables that are useful for inhibiting the growth of viruses, including dengue virus.

4. Take a complete break

Rest in total or bed rest highly recommended for patients of any type of dengue fever. This is done as a way to accelerate recovery.

Home care for patients with dengue fever is only additional treatment as a substitute for hospitalization. This also cannot be done carelessly and depends on the patient's condition. You still need to consult your doctor to get the best treatment.

Prevent dengue fever by ...

Prevention is the most effective type of treatment. This is caused by there is no vaccine which can protect the dengue virus. Avoiding mosquito bites is one of the best ways to prevent it. Here are some ways that can be used to keep the environment free of mosquitoes, namely:

  • Use clothes that cover all body parts, such as trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and socks. Especially if you travel to the tropics.
  • Use a mosquito repellent with a concentration of at least 10 percent diethyltoluamide (DEET), or a higher concentration for longer exposure. Avoid using DEET in children.
  • Avoid using scented soap because it can attract mosquitoes. In addition to the use of perfume in areas where there are many mosquitoes, it should also be avoided.
  • Close the doors and windows of the house if it's late afternoon because mosquitoes usually wander a lot at dusk.
  • Avoid being outside the house in the early hours of the morning, evening, and night where mosquitoes roam a lot.
  • Avoid standing water at home. If you have a water reservoir, you should close it so that the mosquitoes don't gather in that section.
  • When camping or picnic, choose an area that is not too close to the water because mosquitoes like to gather in a place that has lots of water.
