Tips for Overcoming Ringing Ears When Riding a Vehicle

Have you ever felt that your ears were "awkward" next to you, or even ringing, when you were driving for a long time or were on a plane? This is a disorder of the middle ear due to changes in air pressure, and is usually more common if you have a cold, have nasal congestion, allergies or sinus infections, and other hearing-related diseases.

This ear disorder can also occur when driving in mountainous areas or when you doscuba diving. Usually this causes ear pain and hearing loss for a while in one or both ears. The following are some of the problems faced by people who have ear disorders when driving:

1. Mengulum gum

Sucking or sucking candy when the plane starts landing allows air to flow through the Eustachian tube. This also applies when you swallow, yawn, or chew. For babies, you can give them food or drink when the plane begins to land to make them swallow something.

2. Regulate breathing

Try taking deep breaths, then gently exhale with your mouth closed while squeezing / closing your nose (valsava maneuver). In this way, no air is blown out, but you will gently push the air into the Eustachian tube. If you do this, you will feel your ears say 'pop' as a sign that air is being pushed into the middle ear. This is often done to overcome the buzzing in the ear. Repeat this every few minutes until the plane lands or until your ears feel comfortable.

3. Avoid sleeping when landing

Don't sleep when the plane lands or when there is a change in air pressure. Ask someone to wake you up when you land. If you are awake, do the method in number 1, which is swallowing and sucking candy or food to push air into the middle ear.

4. Yawning

Yawning also has the same benefits as swallowing and chewing. However, besides that, you also need to do valsalva maneuver, same as in number 2. This will push the air into the Eustachian tube, so that the ear will not buzz and hurt.

5. Blow a special balloon

Blowing a special balloon can stop the pain during flight and help remove the buzzing of the ear after landing. One of these special balloon products is Otovent. The object is usually determined by the doctor when you check yourself, or you can buy it from a pharmacist. This balloon is attached to the tube, then you place the tube in one of the nostrils. Then you blow it while closing one of the nostrils with your fingers and keeping your mouth closed. Then, stop blowing and start breathing normally. The air will come in and out of the balloon. After that, you can repeat it using the opposite nostril.

6. Taking certain drugs

Your doctor may prescribe a medication or recommend that you take a good medication to control conditions that can prevent the Eustachian tube from working properly. These drugs include:

  • Nasal decongestant spray
  • Oral decongestants
  • Oral antihistamines

To relieve discomfort, you can take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium, or take analgesic pain relievers, such as acetaminophen.

If the disorder lasts for a long time, then you should do therapy with the help of a doctor or perform surgery. Ear disruption surgery is rarely needed. However, your doctor can make an incision in your eardrum to reduce air pressure and drain the fluid inside. Severe injuries, such as a ruptured eardrum or inner ear membrane rupture, usually heal themselves. However, in some rare cases, surgery may be needed to repair it.
