When the month of Ramadan arrives, Muslims are obliged to fast, resist not eating and drinking from dawn until the sun sets. Many Muslims certainly don't want to miss this once a year moment, including nursing mothers. However, when breastfeeding when fasting, what about the production of breast milk? Will it decrease?

Nursing mothers need many calories

Not only during pregnancy, even when breastfeeding the mother still needs to eat more. This is done to maintain the nutritional needs of mothers and babies to be fulfilled. Not surprisingly, many people say that pregnant and lactating women need to eat twice as much for themselves and their babies.

Then, what if nursing mothers when fasting?

Fasting is actually not a barrier for mothers to keep up their calorie needs. Mothers can take advantage of dawn and break the fast to keep up their calorie and nutritional needs. So, in terms of caloric and nutritional needs, mothers can still fulfill it even though they are fasting.

What about the amount of milk produced by breastfeeding mothers when fasting? Will it decrease?

Keep in mind that one of the things that most affects the amount of ASI production is baby suction. The more and more often your baby suckles, the more milk the body produces. So, try to always suckle the baby directly in the mother's breast instead of giving the baby breast milk from the bottle.

The calories and nutrients that mothers get from food do not directly affect milk production. If the calories and vitamins and minerals that are eaten by the mother are still lacking, the body will take vitamins and minerals available in the mother's body to be able to produce milk with sufficient and complete nutritional composition.

So, actually lacking the intake of vitamins and minerals eaten by the mother does not affect breast milk production, but rather detrimental to the availability of vitamins and minerals in the mother's body.

For example, if mothers consume less calcium contained in milk, fish with bones, beans, and green vegetables, then to be able to produce milk with enough calcium content, the mother's body will take the availability of calcium in the bones. So, calcium in the mother's bones will decrease, where this will harm the mother's own health.

Note, don't get dehydrated when fasting

Although breastfeeding during fasting will not affect milk production, do not let you become dehydrated while fasting, because this can reduce milk production.

Dehydration in nursing mothers can occur due to lack of consuming a lot of water when fasting. Therefore, drinking lots of water (at least 8 glasses / day) when breaking fast and dawn is highly recommended for nursing mothers, so that dehydration can be prevented.

Dehydration is characterized by feeling thirsty, the color of yellow urine tends to be dark, dizzy or want to faint, feel weak, and chapped lips. If you feel these signs while fasting, you should immediately cancel your fasting with water. Add a little sugar and salt to the water so that it becomes an ORS solution that can replace electrolytes in the lost body.
