According to the World Health Organization (WHO), thin babies are a condition in which babies are born with low weight (less than 2500 grams). A study revealed that more than 20 million babies around the world were born with thin conditions, and the number of skinny baby cases in Indonesia was still high. Broadly speaking, thin babies are caused by two factors: the mother's factor and the fetal factor.

The cause of thin babies because of the mother's factor

1. Age of mother during pregnancy

The age of the mother during pregnancy will be able to describe the condition of her reproductive system's readiness to bear the additional burden in her body (the fetus's weight). When viewed from the psychological side, the age of a pregnant woman who is sufficient (more than the same as 20 years and less than 35 years), will pay more attention to the care she must do to give birth to a healthy baby.

2. Education of the mother

Although it affects indirectly, but often the higher the level of education of a prospective mother, the more information she will get to prepare for her pregnancy so that later will give birth to a healthy baby.

3. Age of pregnancy at delivery (premature)

Reporting from Nutrition Policy Paper, gestational age of less than 37 weeks increases the potential cause of thin babies. This is because the shorter the gestational age of a mother, the shorter the period of fetal growth in the womb. This then causes the fetus to grow less than perfect.

4. Mother's nutritional status

A study in West Java revealed that pregnant women with Upper Arm Circles (often used as a person's nutritional indicator) of less than 23.5 cm were twice as likely to give birth to thin babies, compared to pregnant women whose Arm Circles were more than 23.5 cm (normal limit).

This also applies to mothers before pregnancy. Another study revealed that mothers with Upper Arm Circles that were less than normal before becoming pregnant, 4 times greater risk of giving birth to thin babies.

Gender

A study in Sri Lanka revealed that a baby's body weight was 58 grams heavier than a baby girl's body weight. Several times this starts to appear at 24 weeks of pregnancy.

What is the danger if the baby is thin?

The birth weight is an important phase for a baby. This phase is the next determining factor for the baby's growth. Indirectly, the condition of a baby at birth will have the following effects:

  • If you don't die at the beginning of your birth, thin babies will have a risk of growing and developing more slowly compared to babies born with normal weight. In addition to disorders of growth and development, someone with a history of thin babies will have high risk factors for the occurrence of hypertension, heart disease and diabetes after reaching the age of 40 years.
  • Skinny babies have a low immune system, so they are susceptible to infection and risk 17 times higher than normal babies to die before the age of 1 year.
  • The level of intelligence of a thin baby will be lower because of a disturbance in brain growth since the womb.

What can be done if a mother has the potential to have a thin baby?

To avoid the risk of pregnancy and childbirth, a mother is required to make an antenatal visit (antenatal care) in full and quality as much as at least 4 times, and check with the doctor at least once, to detect the presence or absence of other medical disorders. These things also certainly apply to mothers who have the potential to give birth to thin babies. These visits include:

  • A visit before the 16th week is at least 1 time
  • Visits between 24-28-28 at least 1 time
  • Visits between 30-32 weeks at least 1 time
  • Visits between 36-38 weeks at least 1 time.
