Medical Video: 😧 Warning Signs And Symptoms Of Cervical Cancer | How to Know If You Have Cervical Cancer
Cervical erosion or also known as ectropion may be rarely heard by some people. This condition is a normal thing that is usually experienced by young women. To find out more, let's look at the explanation below.
What is cervical erosion?
Cervical or ectropion erosion is a condition in which glandular cells that should be inside the cervix (cervix) grow outside the cervix. So that an inflammatory area is formed which looks eroded and infected. However, don't worry, this is not dangerous for you. This condition is also not related to the development of cervical cancer.

What causes cervical erosion?
Cervical erosion usually occurs in young women. Ectropion or erosion of the cervix can be caused by hormonal changes, because of pregnancy or because women are using birth control pills that contain hormones. When you are experiencing a menstrual cycle, the body produces the hormone estrogen. This increase in estrogen levels causes the cervix to swell and open. This can make a number of glandular cells inside the cervix move out of the cervix. As a result, inflammation of the cervix occurs because soft cells inside the cervix meet with hard cells outside the cervix.
Although it is not caused by serious things and is not a dangerous disease, if left alone it can endanger your health. Cervical erosion can make you more susceptible to bacteria and fungi. This can then lead to infection. Therefore, it is often found that people with cervical erosion also have cervical infections.
What are the signs and symptoms of ectropion?
This condition is generally harmless and does not even cause signs and symptoms. However, some symptoms can appear and can cause you discomfort. Some of the things you can feel when experiencing cervical erosion are:
- Very much vaginal discharge that doesn't smell. Odor will appear if the erosion of the cervix is also accompanied by infection.
- Bleeding after sexual intercourse
- Blood spots that are abnormal and not part of menstruation
- Bleeding between menstrual periods

Can cervical erosion be cured?
In general, cervical erosion does not cause serious problems. This condition can even heal on its own without any treatment, unless it is accompanied by an infection. If it does not cause symptoms, cervical erosion does not need to be treated. However, if there are symptoms and you feel uncomfortable with this, you can check this condition with a doctor.
There are several treatments that can help you cure cervical erosion. Usually the treatment is done using heat or cauterise (burning of wounds). This is done to harden the soft cells from inside the cervix, so that bleeding does not occur again. There are two treatments with this technique, namely:
- With silver nitrate to burn soft cells. This is generally not painful when done, but you may feel mild pain.
- With cold coagulation, also to burn soft cells. Before this treatment is done, you will be given a local anesthetic so that you do not feel any pain during the treatment.
However, unfortunately the treatment has side effects. You can experience bleeding or vaginal discharge for about one week to four weeks after treatment. Therefore, allowing your body to treat itself is the best treatment for cervical erosion, especially if it is not accompanied by an infection. If an infection appears, your doctor may give antibiotics. It is best to consult your doctor further regarding your condition.
