Today, almost everyone has a smartphone. The SUPR report released by Vserv's Nlelsen Informate Mobile Insight study found that around 61 percent of smartphone users in Indonesia are less than 30 years old.

The report also found that Smartphne users spent an average of 129 minutes per day. In fact, one of the lime smartphone users in Indonesia consumes around 249MB of data per day, so that it is included in the criteria for data users.

Aside from being a communication tool, smartphones are now transformed as a source of information, helpers at times of embarrassment, filling silence, even to relieve stress. So it is not uncommon for many people to choose to play a smartphone during leisure time such as rest or before going to bed. However, is it true if a smartphone is able to relieve stress? Or vice versa?

Psychological disorders due to playing too much cellphone

The HealthDay News study quoted by everydayhealth.com states that smartphones can increase stress because smartphones often make you feel the need to immediately review and respond to any incoming messages or notifications.

Here are some things you can experience if you use too many smartphones:

1. Low Battery Anxiety

What did you do when your smarthpone battery had reached 15 percent? Let alone or panic then look for a charger / Powerbank? If your answer is panic, then you can experience low battery anxiety, aka anxietylow battery.

2. Phantom Vibration Syndrome

Have you ever felt your smartphone vibrate or thought the phone was ringing when it really wasn't? If so, you can experience phantom vibration syndrome. The study found that the more anxious you are to stay connected via smartphone, the more likely you are to misinterpret itching as a notification of an incoming message / call.

3. Nomophobia

Is missed the smartphone the thing you fear the most? If so, then you may experience nomophobia. Nomophobia is a fear syndrome if you don't have a cellphone. A 2015 study found that someone who is doing activities when his cellphone rings becomes more difficult to concentrate and even increases anxiety.

4. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

FOMO is the fear of missing out on the latest information from the internet or social media. The University of Essex study found that the characteristics of people who have contracted FOMO are those who always check social media accounts at any time to see what other people are doing, even to ignore their own activities.

FOMO can also be interpreted as the emergence of worry when seeing other people doing more fun and happier activities. As a result, those who have FOMO will often compare their lives with others who can make them feel unhappy, jealous, even depressed.

Tips to avoid dependence on smartphones

Indeed there is nothing wrong with using a smartphone. It's just that, if the smartphone actually changes you to be indifferent to the environment, lazy to move, and make you addicted, then you need to immediately limit the use of smartphones. Here are some things you can do to avoid excessive smartphone usage:

  • Get up and move. Using too much cellphone is not infrequently going to make you lazy to do activities, therefore, you need to force yourself to get up and do physical activity, even if it's just a light activity like going for an afternoon, yoga or riding a bicycle.
  • Have fun. Although playing a smartphone can provide fun, it's just that doing activities other than staring at the smartphone screen such as cooking, drawing, and meeting friends, will provide other pleasures that can make your life happier and more colorful.
  • Turn off the smartphone before going to bed. If you have trouble falling asleep, try replacing the smartphone playing activity by reading books / listening to music, because using a smartphone before going to bed including light from your smartphone screen actually keeps your brain working so that it will keep you awake and sleep harder.

Do not let the progress of technology actually makes you forget that technology is actually there to facilitate human communication, not to make you dependent and become helpless when the smartphone does not turn on.
