Medical Video: Rotator Cuff Shoulder Surgery

Definition

What is a rotator cuff (Shoulder Surgery)?

Rotator cuffs or rotator cuffs are formed from four muscles and tendons that attach to the arms to the shoulder blades. Damage that often occurs in this part is the pinching of the shoulder tendon or the tear of the rotator cuff.

When do I need to undergo shoulder surgery?

The doctor will recommend surgery if the shoulder condition is too bad for alternative treatments. Surgery is also possible if the patient's shoulder condition deteriorates after undergoing a treatment method.

Prevention & warning

What should I know before undergoing shoulder surgery?

In many cases, the patient's shoulder injured in the rotator cuff can function normally again. Some treatment options that can be done are modification of activities, shoulder strengthening exercises, and physiotherapy. Pain-relieving drugs such as paracetamol and anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can also help relieve pain. In addition, injection of steroids and local anesthesia to the shoulder can reduce pain. However, if the rotator cuff tear is large, the possibility of surgery is the only option to restore your shoulder function.

Process

What should I do before undergoing shoulder surgery?

In the surgical preparation stage, make sure you tell your doctor about your health condition, the medications you are taking, as well as all kinds of allergies you have. The anesthesiologist will explain the anesthesia procedure and give further instructions. Make sure you follow all doctor's instructions, including a ban on eating and drinking before surgery. In general, you are required to fast for six hours before the operation is carried out. However, you may be allowed to consume drinks like coffee a few hours before the surgery.

What is the process of shoulder surgery?

In general, this operation is performed under general anesthesia, but does not rule out the possibility of other anesthetic techniques used. Surgery usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. Shoulder pain due to tendons in the tendon is usually treated with arthroscopy (keyhole surgery). The surgeon will use a device to remove thickened tissue, loosen tight tissue and cut some bones. The surgeon can also repair the rotator cuff tear by arthroscopy even though open surgery may be necessary.

What should I do after undergoing bone surgery?

Postoperatively, patients are allowed to go home the same day. Each stitch or clip is usually released after one to two weeks. Patients usually need a year of rehabilitation before the shoulder can function normally. Regular exercise has been shown to accelerate the recovery process. However, before deciding to exercise, ask for a doctor's advice. You may not be able to have perfect shoulders as before when the shoulder has not been injured.

Complications

What complications can occur?

includes infection and damage to nerves and blood vessels around it. However, modern surgical techniques accompanied by medical monitoring reduce this risk significantly. The pain and stiffness of the shoulder that appears postoperatively is normal.

Specific complications of shoulder surgery, namely:

● shoulder bleeding

● limited shoulder movements

● shoulder infection appears

● the presence of blood clots

● severe pain, stiffness and complex regional pain syndrome arise

● nerve damage

● the rotator cuff is torn again or the tear cannot heal.

You can reduce the risk of complications by following operating instructions, such as fasting and stopping taking certain medications.
