Are you among those who weigh weight every day? Maybe you feel or even realize your weight keeps changing from hour to hour, even day to day. Don't worry, almost everyone experiences the same thing and this is normal. Then, why can body weight change every day?

Why does the weight change every time it is weighed?

Body weight can change every day even in a matter of hours. This change is caused by how much water you consume and is lost from the body every day.

Kelly Hogan, MS, RD, SDN, clinical nutrition coordinator at the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai Hospital stated that the fluids that enter the body play an important role in changing body weight.

Two glasses of water added to the water content in the food can add as much as 0.45 kg of weight. Eating, drinking, urinating, defecating, and exercising can all affect the composition of water in the body which will have an effect on changes in the scales.

So remember, what you eat and drink plays a role in determining your weight. If you eat lots of salty food, your body will store lots of fluids that will make you feel bloated so that your body seems to be heavier.

Likewise with carbohydrate intake that can affect how much water the body has because the body needs extra fluid to store muscle sugar (glycogen) as energy. Every gram of glycogen requires three grams of water.

Therefore, the type of activity and how much water you consume per day can make your body weight change which is often temporary. So do not think that changes in body weight every day or every hour are a sign that you lose body fat because it is very unlikely to lose 1-2 kg of fat overnight.

Weigh your weight every morning

Dr. Anita Petruzelli M.D., a doctor at BodyLogicMD stated that to find out your consistent weight, try to weigh it at the same time throughout the day. Morning is the best time to weigh.

This is because the body is still not mixed with the food you eat. Whereas day and night the body has a lot of food and fluids that can add weight which is a factor in changing weight when weighed.

Try to weigh your body after waking up naked and already defecating, whether you defecate or urinate. Try to weigh your weight at the same hour and the same scale to see if your weight is stable.

Increases and decreases in body weight every day or hour are normal. However, if the number shown increases and lasts for two days, the sign is that it is no longer an excess of fluid in the body, but rather body fat that has been formed.

Weight loss is not the only way to assess how healthy your body is. Do not let your efforts to reduce or increase body weight is done using extreme methods that can harm the body.
