Not a few people have difficulty reciting a few letters correctly and well, such as the letters R, S, or L. In Indonesia, this condition is known as slurred. Slurred initially occurs in children under five. At that time, they began to learn to speak and recite letters one by one. Then, does slurry normally occur in children? Is it possible that slurred children will become a habit in adulthood? What is the cause of slurry? Is it true that the tongue is too short?
The cause of lisp in children is not due to a short tongue
Slurred that happens to your child or even when you are a child first is not caused by the short tongue that your child has. But due to incomplete tongue muscles in children under five, making them difficult to recite a few alphabets. Slurred can also be considered a speech disorder, if it occurs in children who have started to grow up.
The average toddler will start talking around the age of 1 year, even though the vocabulary mentioned is only "mama" or "daddy". And between the ages of 1 and 2 years, toddlers will start learning to recite words that they often hear from their surroundings. So, slurry will appear at that time until the 5 year old child.
It is rather difficult to predict whether slurred that occurs in a child will be carried away until he is an adult. However, it is usually slurred which is caused by talking habits - not bodily abnormalities - will not carry over into adulthood.
Slurred causes in children over 5 years of age
If the pronunciation of the letters S, D, L, T, R or so is still unclear until the child is over 5 years old, then you could say the child has a speech disorder. Indeed this condition is not severe and dangerous, it's just that the child will be difficult to speak clearly. Some of which can be the cause of lisp in children over the age of 5 years, namely:
- Interdental lisp, which is lisp caused by a tongue that protrudes between two front teeth
- Slurred dental, where the cause of slurred is the position of the tongue that touches both front teeth, which causes difficulty in pronouncing the letters S, T, or Z.
- Lisp lateral, caused by air entering the oral cavity but instead directed to the lower tongue, so the pronunciation of the letter S does not hiss.
- Palatal lisp, is a lisp caused by the tongue touching the soft palate when speaking, so that the pronunciation issued is different.
Mostly, the cause of slurred that occurs in children over 5 years is due to the shape of the tongue or control of the tongue muscles that are not true, and then making the words not heard clearly. Another cause of lisp that can also occur is the presence of nerve disorders in children, Down syndrome, hearing loss, and developmental disorders.
How do you get rid of lisp that occurs in children?
Slurred on toddlers is normal and usually disappears as he learns and practices in reciting letters. But if your child keeps slurping until he is over 5 years old, you can take him to a speech therapist.
When doing speech therapy, your child will learn how to pronounce letters and various vocabulary correctly. Not only that, the therapist will also provide good breathing techniques and train the tongue muscles which may be a cause of slurred on your child.
However, if the cause of slurry is due to physiology - for example, incorrect tooth position - then your child may be given medical treatment. It's best to discuss this with a pediatrician.
