In a study conducted by a team from New York University, around 200 people were tested to determine their psychopathic scores. Then they played 260 different songs.
The participants were then asked to rate each song and the researchers withdrew the data and then related it to the psychopathic scores of the respondents. The genre most favored by psychopaths is rap, R & B, followed by rock music. In contrast, participants with low psychopathic scores tended to like pop songs.
Researchers found that people who scored high on psychopathy tests tended to give high numbers to songs such as No Diggity by Blackstreet (genre R & B) and Lose Yourself from Eminem (rap genre).
Meanwhile, those on the edge of the spectrum of psychopathy tend to be fans of songs My Sharona from The Knacks and Titanium by Sia. Both are included in the pop-rock genre and dance.
Can it detect the psychopathic nature of one's musical taste?
The simple answer, can't. It is impossible to detect any psychological disorders only from one's musical taste. Psychological disorders, including psychopathy, so far can only be detected through a series of tests by mental health specialists and psychologists.
The experts behind this study emphasize that this is an initial and unpublished result. However, researchers are interested enough to launch a large study in which thousands of people across the spectrum of psychopathy will be questioned about their musical tastes.
The purpose of this study is to find a way to detect a psychopath quickly. Researchers believe that songs can help predict who has a disorder, which affects about one percent of people. However, this research still needs to be developed further.
