Medical Video: What causes lower back pain & when should I be worried?
When coughing, the body, especially the back, will vibrate. In this condition, coughing will also move the lower back. Usually the back will move leaning forward when coughing. Because the cough affects your body's position, the possibility of feeling back pain is quite large. Some people even feel pain in the lower back or waist. So what causes the lower back to hurt when coughing?
Causes of lower back pain when coughing
Usually only people with chronic cough will experience pain that is quite piercing in the lower back or waist. A chronic cough is a cough that lasts eight weeks or more. This condition is not only tiring but can also burden the back and cause more than usual contractions.
When your back hurts during a chronic cough, the cause is excessive pressure on the back of the body. When coughing gradually heals, usually lower back pain will also disappear by itself.
However, when you only experience a mild cough, but your lower back hurts, chances are there are other problems. This condition is generally caused by problems in the spine or muscles that will get worse when coughing. Lower back pain can be caused by several conditions such as:
1. Herniated disk
This condition occurs when the rubber pad (disc) between the spine protrudes out or breaks and presses on the nerve root. This herniated disk can also occur when you experience a chronic cough due to too much bending so that it compresses your spine.
2. Muscle injury
Muscle injury can occur when you do physical activity beyond your ability. In addition, injuries can also occur when the back muscles are dislocated or tightened. As a result, ligaments or parts that connect the bones and themselves are torn.
3. Muscle cramps
Muscle spasms can occur when the muscles experience excessive and sudden contractions, including when coughing. Usually, the seizures will last for a few seconds and the muscles will tighten.
4. Poor mattress quality
The condition of a mattress that has not been replaced for too long can also cause lower back pain. Because the back requires soft pads during sleep to support health. As a result, when your back is not supported by the right mattress, lower back pain will be stronger when you are having a chronic cough.
Do you have to see a doctor?
You need to go to a doctor immediately if back pain doesn't improve in two weeks. In addition, other symptoms that indicate that you have another serious condition than just a back contraction when coughing, namely:
- Fever
- The pain felt even more at night
- Loss of bladder control (often want to wet the bed)
- Numbness, weakness, and tingling in one leg or both.
- The pain that arises after trauma is like after falling.
- Pain and throbbing in the stomach.
- Weight loss suddenly without a clear reason.
Also pay attention to whether the chronic cough you are experiencing improves over time. Because, treating cough should help relieve pain in your lower back which turns out to be problematic.
In order to avoid pain due to the wrong pressure and posture, try to keep the condition of your spine not too bent, including leaning forward. We recommend that you try to position your shoulders relaxed facing down so that your back does not contract excessively when coughing.
