Chickenpox is an infectious disease that can spread easily and quickly. Understand first, what is chicken pox?
Chickenpox, or in the medical language it is called varicella is a disease caused by a virus varicella zoster. This disease will cause fluid-filled bumps (resilient) which is itchy and generally spreads throughout the body.
Chickenpox is an infectious disease that can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Sometimes, smallpox can also be transmitted from the smallpox itself. That is why people who have smallpox must be isolated until they are cured so they do not transmit the disease to others.
This one disease is also a common disease that can occur in all ages. However, people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable, such as babies, pregnant women, and the elderly. This disease can also affect adults and generally symptoms that appear more severe than children.
Prevent chicken pox
So far the most effective way to prevent chickenpox is to do it immunization. Experts from CDC states that chickenpox immunization is very safe and effective in providing complete protection from the virus that causes chickenpox. Some 90 percent of people who have received the vaccine will not get chickenpox. However, if you find that immunization does not provide complete protection, then at least the smallpox vaccine can reduce the symptoms or severity of smallpox.
Smallpox immunization is recommended for all children under the age of 13 and have never been exposed to smallpox. In addition to children, smallpox vaccine is also recommended for adults who have never received a smallpox vaccine or who have never had smallpox. If you have already had smallpox, you don't need smallpox immunization.
Children and adults will be given two doses of immunization separately. For children, the first dose is given when the child is around 12 to 18 months. The second dose is given when the child is 4 to 6 years old.
As for adults, a second dose can be given within 4 to 8 weeks after the first dose is given.
In Indonesia, smallpox immunization is not included mandatory immunization list for children. Even so, you are still encouraged to immunize chickenpox to prevent transmission or transmit the disease. Smallpox vaccine is usually combined with vaccines for other diseases, such as MMRV immunization. The MMRV vaccine is carried out to prevent measles, mumps, respiratory allergies, and smallpox.
Prevent transmission if the closest person is exposed to smallpox
Chickenpox transmission is very easy and fast. Well, besides immunization, there are various other things that can be done as a way to prevent chickenpox. If there is one family at home affected by smallpox, you can prevent transmission by:
- Always use a mask when interacting with family members who get chickenpox.
- Diligent hand washing, especially after contact with people who are smallpox.
- Temporarily do not share personal items (towels, clothes or combs) and sleep in a room with people who are smallpox.
- Separate clothes or sheets of people who are exposed to smallpox when washed.
- Immediately wipe objects or surfaces that are directly contacted by people who are smallpox using antiseptic fluid.
Whereas if you get chickenpox, you can do some simple methods so that you don't pass on smallpox to others:
- Do not go to public places such as schools, offices, or shopping centers before you are completely healed.
- Do not scratch the itchy skin so as not to leave a scar. This wound can then cause infection by bacteria that enter the skin.
