Nightmares can come at any time of your night. Not only for small children, nightmares can also occur in adults at every age. In fact, one out of every two adults can have a nightmare. Nightmares may not be a problem if you can immediately forget them. However, what if a nightmare haunts your days? This is certainly very disturbing. Then, how do you deal with nightmares?

What causes nightmares?

Before you understand how to deal with nightmares, it's a good idea to find out in advance what nightmares and their causes are. If you already know the cause, it will be easier for you to overcome a nightmare.

  • Psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression, can cause nightmares. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can also cause you to experience recurring nightmares.

How do you deal with nightmares?

When you wake up because of a nightmare, maybe you feel scared and don't know what to do. Fear and panic when you wake up can actually make you feel worse. You may need to do the following when you wake up because of a nightmare:

  • Calm yourself first, take a deep breath slowly
  • Realize and understand that it is only a dream. You may need to talk to yourself that what you see just now is a dream. Now, you are in the real world and sleeping. Touching and seeing things around might help.
  • Also convince yourself that you are now safe. You can turn on the lights and check the house keys or walk to see your home situation.
  • Try to see and calm your muscles. Tense muscles are the body's natural response to bad things that occur in dreams.
  • Drinking water may help you calm down.
  • If you can't fall asleep after a nightmare, you can do something else that makes you forget the dream. Do your favorite activities that can calm you, such as reading books, listening to music, or watching television. After you are calm, try to sleep again. You still need time to rest.

If nightmares that occur overnight continue to haunt you to interfere with your life, maybe some of these steps you can do.

  • Prepare yourself for sleep. Before you sleep, maybe you have special things that you have to do to make your sleep peaceful. For example, you have to clean yourself, read prayers, read books, and so on. After that, calm yourself down, take a deep breath slowly, then fall asleep.
  • Finding out the cause of a nightmare. Nightmares can occur because of a trigger. Maybe something happens in your life that can trigger a nightmare. Think about it.
  • Write your dream. Write down a nightmare that has haunted you as much as possible. However, you need to change the ending of the nightmare to your liking, of course, what pleases you. Remember the story of your dream, and read the story every night before you go to sleep. If this method helps you to overcome your nightmare, you can continue this method to overcome your other nightmares. Maybe you need to write down every nightmare in your diary. However, if you are afraid to remember your nightmare again, maybe this method is not suitable for you. You can choose other ways.
  • Tell your dream with other people you trust. This might reduce your fear.
  • If these methods have not satisfied you, maybe you need to talk to your doctor.
