Medical Video: 7 Ways to Survive Natural Disasters

Landslides are the occurrence of movements of land, rocks, or other materials in large quantities suddenly or gradually, which generally occurs in steep and unstable areas. The main cause of landslides is gravity, but the volume is influenced by various natural and human factors.

Natural factors include: 1) geological conditions, namely weathered rocks, slope of land, elements or types of soil layers, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc .; 2) climatic conditions, namely high rainfall; 3) topographic conditions, namely the slope of the land surface such as valleys, slopes and hills; 4) water management conditions, namely accumulation of water volume or mass, dissolution and hydrostatic pressure, etc.

Human factors include various activities that can affect the occurrence of landslides. For example cliff cuts on mining on steep slopes, failure of retaining wall structures, deforestation, fish pond cultivation on slopes, agricultural systems that do not pay attention to safe irrigation, development of areas that violate spatial rules, poor drainage systems, and others -other.

Let us know more about the landslides that often affect Indonesia with various information from the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).

As a result of a landslide disaster

Material carried by landslides can be in the form of soil, rocks, mud, rubbish, etc. The speed varies, some are slow, some are tens of kilometers per hour. Therefore, the impact of landslides can also be detrimental to humanity and the economy. Landslides and the material they carry can make us lose property, shelter, and cause casualties.

On January 1, 2006, a landslide struck six sub-districts in Jember district, East Java. As a result of the landslide, 90 people died, 28 people were injured and 7,644 people were forced to flee because 75 houses were destroyed, 35 houses were severely damaged, and 285 houses were slightly damaged.

What should we do when a landslide occurs?

1. Before a landslide occurs

If the area where you live has experienced a landslide, chances are that your area has the potential to be crossed by landslides again. This is what must be done before a landslide occurs:

  • Do a mapping of the area where you live and its surroundings. Then mark which areas often occur landslides or potential landslides. This map or plan will help us determine where the safe and dangerous points are. Inform this map to the family and residents of the area where you live.
  • Take steps to reduce risk of landslides, for example by carrying out tree planting movements on slopes prone to landslides.
  • Learn the signs of a landslide. Usually landslides occur after heavy rain continues. Beware of the color of river water that turns cloudy. Likewise if seepage, springs, or cracks appear extending on the ground. Before landslides sometimes land, rock, or twigs collapse.
  • Communities in landslide prone areas have to take turns patrolling. Landslides that occur at night cost more lives, because people do not have time to save themselves when they fall asleep.
  • If signs of landslides have been seen, then consider evacuating to a safer place.

2. When an avalanche occurs

There is not much that can be done when a landslide occurs. The important thing is to stay calm and immediately move to a safe place from the avalanche line. If possible, help others who are weak, such as people who are sick, toddlers, and the elderly. Hold in a protected place until the situation is completely safe. Contact parties related to disaster management, for example PMI, Satlak PB (Disaster Management Unit), police, and others.

3. After a landslide occurs

If you survive a landslide, here are some actions you must take:

  • Contact the local government, PMI, the police, or other organizations if there is no help.
  • Stay in a safe area. Follow calls from the government or officers to stay in a safe place. Do not return home if the situation has not been set safe.
  • If you can, help families, seniors, people with disabilities, and children. Ask the clerk to find a family or other undiscovered person. Avalanches can get them trapped or injured so they cannot move to a safe place.
  • Landslides can sometimes bury entire villages. The government and the community usually relocate the village. Stay optimistic about being able to build a new life. Give enthusiasm and confidence to the family and people around you.
