Medical Video: HOW TO AVOID GETTING FOOD POISONING WHILST TRAVELLING!
Going back and forth to the toilet to defecate because of diarrhea can greatly disturb the comfort of your trip. So what should be done to overcome diarrhea when traveling long distances? Here's how.
Overcome diarrhea when traveling far
Diarrhea is generally caused by bacterial contamination in food or drinks (which is not guaranteed to be clean) that you consume throughout the trip.
If you experience diarrhea during a trip, here are some things you can do to treat diarrhea based on its severity.
Diarrhea with mild to moderate dehydration
Most cases of diarrhea can generally be treated with:
- Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Take over-the-counter medications such as loperamide (like Imodium) to manage symptoms. This drug can help reduce the intensity of you to go back and forth to the bathroom.
Always read the instructions for using the drug listed in the packaging properly, before giving the medicine to the baby or children. Pregnant women and children younger than three years should avoid drugs that contain bismuth, such as Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate.
Consider taking antibiotics if the doctor has prescribed you.
You can also drink ORS solutions to restore lost body fluids. ORS solutions can be purchased at the nearest pharmacy or drug store. If you leave in a state of diarrhea, you should pack the following ingredients to mix the ORS solution yourself if you don't find a pharmacy or drug store at your location.
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ½ teaspoon of baking soda
- 4 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 liter of water
You can drink ORS along with food.
Diarrhea with severe dehydration
Diarrhea with severe dehydration is characterized by a very frequent frequency of bowel movements so that the body loses a lot of fluids and makes you feel very weak. Severe dehydration also generally shows symptoms of dehydration such as dry mouth, reduced frequency of urination, thick urine color, and sunken eyes.
Severe diarrhea accompanied by symptoms of dehydration is included in the emergency condition. Therefore, overcome severe diarrhea by:
- Immediately look for the emergency hospital emergency room to get intravenous fluids so that the body still gets fluid intake.
- If the location of the nearest emergency room is far enough or you are stuck in traffic, then continue to drink water to prevent dehydration from getting worse.
Abstinence from food and drinks when diarrhea
If you experience diarrhea during a vacation trip, avoid caffeine and dairy products that can worsen symptoms or increase your risk of dehydration. Keep drinking water or drinks containing electrolytes along the way. It could also be with tea, fruit juice or clear soup.
When diarrhea has started to improve, add the intake of complex carbohydrates such as salted biscuits, fresh wheat cereal, bananas, potatoes, rice, and noodles. Do not eat high-fiber foods during diarrhea and recovery. After diarrhea disappears, you can return to your normal diet.
Diarrhea during holidays is very unpleasant and disturbing. If possible, take a quick visit to the nearest clinic to get treatment so you can enjoy your trip again.
