Regulating diet and adjusting it to the needs of body activities, is the core of efforts to reduce weight. However, increasing body weight after being down is a sign that the body cannot maintain a steady weight. This is due to lifestyle factors and physiological factors of the body after undergoing a diet.

What causes weight gain again?

Amount of up and down calorie intake

This is something that might contribute most to weight gain in people who are or have been on a diet. This is because calorie intake that rises in a short time will again increase body weight. When undergoing a diet, a person will reduce calorie intake to below the usual amount, for example 1800 calories to 1500 calories. Then, after a period of decline, the calorie intake that is consumed again becomes a normal amount (1800 calories) or even more. This is what makes the body weight will rise again.

Body weight tends to increase rapidly because after a diet, your body has adapted to a small number of calories. From the previous example, if after your diet your body has become accustomed to 1500 calorie needs, when your weight is normal and you return to 1800 calories, your body will receive more calories which will eventually be stored as fat and cause weight gain back.

Your weight will even increase more than before the diet when you do binge eating or eat a lot of food after a diet. Your diet might help you lose weight, but if you go back to eating with excess intake again so does your weight.

Hormonal factor

Some hormones that are in the stomach, pancreas, and fat tissue are closely related to the process of regulating body weight, one of which is the process of stimulating the desire to eat in the brain. Decreased fat levels in the body in people who are on a diet, usually followed by a decrease in the hormone leptin (serves to send a message to the brain when it is full) and decreased the hormone ghrelin (hungry stimulation). Although it indirectly affects body fat levels, these hormones greatly affect individuals in individual consumption patterns

One study in 2011 showed that weight loss caused changes in digestive hormone levels, and followed cendering hunger was higher than before the study began. One member of the researcher, Professor Joseph Proietto, Ph.D from the University of Melbourne (as reported by CNN in October 2011) said that personality and psychological factors determine how these individuals face hunger (caused by hormonal changes).

"This is probably what causes some people to keep their weight better than others. Keeping your weight (so as not to increase again) requires continuous effort and keeping it from being too hungry, "he added.

Lack of physical activity

Not doing physical activity in an effort to lose weight will increase the risk of weight gain again after experiencing a decline. Without physical activity, the body will be more difficult to adjust weight. If we consume excess calories after the diet is complete, the excess calories will be stored and increase weight. However, with physical activity, excess calories will be metabolized to reduce stored calories.

Recommendation from American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in scientific articles Donnelly and colleagues in maintaining weight in adults is actively engaged in 150 to 250 minutes / week or equivalent to 36 minutes / day. The intensity is the minimum level to maintain weight so that the calories consumed do not exceed the calories needed by the body.

How do you lose weight again?

Gaining weight after undergoing a diet is a natural thing. When we reduce intake, the body will try to balance it again by stimulating the brain to feel hungry. Therefore, excessive starvation needs to be prevented, by slowly dieting and remaining adequate nutritional intake.

Keep in mind, before you go on a diet it's a good idea to change your eating habits in terms of the amount of intake, time of consumption, and type of food. Start exercising if after losing weight you want to go back to your normal diet before the diet.
