Before cleaning the baby's belly button, make preparations first
When you clean your baby's belly button, when you are bathing or not, you should first prepare in order to prevent the risk of infectious diseases.
1. Prepare equipment
Before cleaning the navel, prepare foam (sponge) smooth or cotton, soap, towels, and clean water. Don't leave your baby in an open shirt when you pick up the furniture.
2. Wash your hands
Before starting to clean the baby's belly button, wash your hands first with soap and under running water. This is very important because dirty hands can become a nest of germs and cause the baby to get infected.
After washing your hands, dry your hands, just start cleaning your baby.
3. Pay attention to the navel's condition carefully
Before you start cleaning, look at the condition of the baby's belly button. Is an infection occurring like a wound, reddened, swollen, bleeding or not inside the navel.
If this happens, you should consult your pediatrician immediately, and delay first to clean your child's navel. If not, continue the next step.
How to clean the baby's belly button if the umbilical cord is still attached
The baby's belly button, which still has an umbilical cord, can be cleaned when you bathe your little one. If you don't dare to clean when bathing your baby, you can do it in the following ways:
- Take clean cotton wool and wet with warm water mixed with soap.
- Squeeze the cotton until there are no more water droplets left.
- Gently, clean the belly button, clean it from the inside out on the skin around the navel.
- Also clean the umbilical cord gently from the base.
If there is dirt in the navel, especially in newborns where the umbilical cord is still hanging, make sure the dirt in the rope area is clean.
After wiping cotton from warm soapy water, then wipe it with clean warm water using cotton. Next, dry the baby's belly button with a towel.

If you have no umbilical cord, you can clean it while washing your little one.
Clean the baby's belly button after you wash, baby's face, eyes, hair, and upper body. Take a small, soft towel and clean the belly button slowly using a washcloth. Then rinse the navel that has been cleaned.
Then dry the belly button with a towel as usual. Make sure the baby's navel basin is completely dry.
