Motion sickness is caused by signals sent from the senses of movement, such as: the eyes, the inner ear, nerves in the feet and hands, to the brain. Under normal circumstances, these three areas will respond to the movements that occur. When signals are received and sent out of sync with each other, for example when you see movement quickly in a film, your eyes will feel its movement, but your inner ear and nerves won't feel it - your brain will receive signals and conflicting activities and makes you feel nauseous. The same thing happens when your child sits in a low chair in a car, so he can't look out the window. The inside of his ear can feel movement, but his eyes and nerves don't feel it.

Signs and symptoms of motion sickness in children

Motion sickness usually starts with a little nausea, cold sweat, fatigue, and no appetite. Usually it will be followed by vomiting. The child may not be able to explain his nausea, but it will appear when his face becomes pale and agitated, yawns, and cries. Then, he will lose appetite (even his favorite food), and vomit. This is because travel by car makes it nauseous, but it usually gets better over time.

Causes of motion sickness

There is no clear reason why some children experience more motion sickness than other children. Because many children who are initially drunk feel headaches a few years later, many believe that motion sickness is the initial form of migraine.

Drunk vehicles usually occur on a boat trip, plane, or while on a shaking trip, like turbulence or a shock in the plane, or a surging sea. Stress and joy can also trigger a sense of motion sickness or make it worse.

How do you prevent car sickness in children?

If your child begins to experience symptoms of motion sickness, you should stop activities that make him motion sickness. If it happens in the car, take a moment to the resting place and let the child out to "find the wind" for a while. If you are on a long trip, you need to do a few short stops. If this condition is due to playing a swing or carousel, stop the game and keep the child away from the toy.

Because motion sickness in a car is most often felt from other vehicle drunkenness, many prevention tips have been developed. Besides doing a short stop, try the following things!

  • If your child hasn't eaten 3 hours before the trip, give your child a light snack before the trip. This can also be applied to aircraft and ship trips. This can reduce hunger, which can make the symptoms of motion sickness worse
  • Try to divert your child's attention from nausea. Try listening to the radio, singing, or chatting.
  • Try to see the scenery outside the car, not reading or playing games.
  • If the tips above do not help, stop the car, let your child lie with his eyes closed. Cold compresses on the forehead can also help reduce symptoms of car sickness.

Medication for motion sickness

If you are going to travel and your child has been car sick before, you can give him a hangover before the trip as a preventative step. Some of these drugs can be purchased at pharmacies without using a prescription, but consult your pediatrician before using them. Although this medication can help, sometimes it will cause side effects such as drowsiness (which means when you get to your destination, your child will be too tired to enjoy it), dry mouth and nose, or blurred vision.

When should you contact a doctor?

If your child has symptoms of motion sickness when there is no movement, such as if your child has a headache; difficult to hear, see, speak or walk; or if your child's gaze is empty, tell your pediatrician about it. This can be a symptom of other problems besides motion sickness.
