Changing skin color to darker by sunbathing or using a tool in a salon does not seem to be a wise choice for women, whether pregnant or not.

Dark skin color is actually an attempt by the skin to protect itself from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Leaving skin exposed to UV light repeatedly and for a long time can accelerate the effects of aging and increase the risk of skin cancer.

There has been no specific impact of sun exposure or artificial UV light on babies in the womb. However, several studies indicate a possible link between UV exposure and folic acid insufficiency in the body of pregnant women. UV light can break down folic acid, whereas in the first few weeks of pregnancy, high levels of folic acid can protect babies from brain and spinal defects (neural tube defects), such as spina bifida.

As an effort to prevent, avoid continuous exposure to UV light in early pregnancy. Take supplements to increase folic acid during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Sunbathing or sunbathing

You are allowed to take an afternoon rest in the sun. However, do not overdo it and always use sunscreen to protect the skin.

During pregnancy, the skin tends to be more sensitive so that it easily burns in the sun. For mothers who have cases like this, avoid sunlight as much as possible.

Use enough sunscreen cream. The skin of pregnant women is classified as faster changing color. Because, pregnant women have a higher level of melanocyte-stimulating hormone. This hormone makes the skin darker because it reacts to sunlight. By sunbathing, this hormone can cause irregular dark spots on the face (chloasma or melasma), or lines in the middle of the stomach (linea nigra).

In the middle of the day, try to stay indoors when the sun is right above your head. Sunbathing in the sun for hours increases the risk of dehydration and overheating. This is certainly not good for the health of the mother and the fetus.

Sunbed

Sunbed can change skin color to darker by using a mattress shaped heater. Preferably, avoid it sunbed until the certainty of the level of security of tools for pregnant women is known. You can also see a doctor in the dermatology department for skin care so that the effects of skin damage can be avoided to a minimum.

If you still want to have dark skin, it will be much safer if you use a skin-darkening lotion fake tanning lotion.
