Various types of skin diseases during pregnancy
1. Pruritic urticarial papules and plaque of pregnancy (PUPPP)
PUPPP is a skin condition characterized by reddish spots and bumps accompanied by itching during pregnancy. This disease appears in the third trimester of pregnancy and usually appears first on the abdomen and can then spread to the thighs, buttocks and chest.
The cause of skin disease during pregnancy is unclear. Experts suspect this disease occurs due to changes in the immune system of pregnant women. Reddish spots and itchy skin during pregnancy usually disappear within 1-2 weeks after giving birth.
2. Prurigo pregnancy
This disease occurs in 1 in 300 pregnancies and can be experienced in any trimester. One of the symptoms is itching during pregnancy and bumps like insect bites on any part of the skin. The cause of this condition is thought to be due to changes in the immune system of women during pregnancy.
You may experience itchy skin during pregnancy for several months until a few moments after giving birth.
3. Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP)
ICP is actually an abnormality in the liver that often occurs during pregnancy. The symptoms of this disease are intense itching during pregnancy, so-called pruritus gravidarum.
Generally, there are no reddish spots on the skin. Itching is usually felt on the palms and soles of the feet, but can spread to other parts of the body. This skin disease starts in the third trimester of pregnancy and disappears several days after giving birth.
4. Herpes gestationis
Pemphigoid gestationis or what is often called herpes gestationis is an autoimmune disease that occurs in 1 in 50,000 pregnancies. This skin disease during pregnancy appears in the second and third trimesters, sometimes for a few moments after giving birth.
The symptoms are bumps filled with water that are often found in the stomach. These skin disorders can even extend to all parts of the body, in serious cases.
5. Pruritic folliculitis of pregancy
This disease appears in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Symptoms of the disease are reddish spots (papules) that appear on the abdomen, arms, chest and back. Itching is not the main characteristics of this disease. Complaints usually disappear on their own after giving birth.
