Medical Video: Mental Health Tips : How to Talk to a Schizophrenic

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder in which sufferers will find it difficult to distinguish the real world from the imaginary world. Schizophrenia is one of the chronic psychotic disorders, people who experience it cannot judge reality well and have poor self-understanding. This situation is self-defeating and can sometimes threaten the environment. Patients sometimes go berserk because of the beliefs and disturbances they experience. Schizophrenia itself has many kinds, such as paranoid, hebefrenic, catatonic, not even detailed schizophrenia. The most common type of schizophrenia is the paranoid type, followed by hebefrenic.

Symptoms of schizophrenia consist of positive symptoms and negative symptoms. The positive symptoms are delusions and hallucinations. However, not many people know about understanding in schizophrenic patients who are the main trigger factors for changes in patient behavior. Come on, follow the explanation below.

Is that a notion?

According to the Ministry of Health in 2000, understanding is a person's beliefs that are not in accordance with reality, but are maintained and cannot be changed logically. This belief comes from the thought of someone who has lost control. Knowledge is also a belief about the contents of the mind that is incompatible with intelligence and cultural background. Understanding is divided into 2 large groups, namely primary and secondary. Primary insight arises illogically, without external causes. Whereas secondary insight is usually logical, it can be followed, and is a way to explain other symptoms of schizophrenia.

Why do understandings occur?

In the Kaplan and Sadock psychiatric textbooks, there are several factors that cause a person to have a certain understanding. There are at least 8 situations that allow the development of ideas, namely:

  1. Increased expectations, namely when someone has expectations that are too high, but experience obstacles or failures to make it happen.
  2. Get sadistic therapy such as prolonged domestic violence, or other torture practices.
  3. Situations that increase mistrust and suspicion.
  4. Social isolation, for example, the phenomenon of pasung.
  5. A situation that increases jealousy.
  6. Situations that allow a decrease in self-esteem (low self-esteem).
  7. Situations that cause a person to see his disability in others, for example feeling less beautiful, less tall, less thin.
  8. Situations that increase the likelihood of contemplation of the meaning and motivation of something such as obsession with religion, obsession with cultural rituals, etc..

Types of understanding in schizophrenics

Understanding is the main symptom that causes behavioral changes in people with schizophrenia. Because of understanding, sufferers like living in an imaginary world. Not infrequently, because of the idea also, sufferers can hurt themselves as well as others around them. The type of understanding commonly found in people with schizophrenia include:

  • Understanding of greatness, is excessive belief that he has special strengths or strengths that are different from others, is repeated over and over but not in accordance with reality. For example, believing that he is the king of the world, he is the master of the universe, and so on.
  • Religious ideas is excessive belief in a religion, repeated over and over but not in accordance with reality. For example claiming God, claiming to be a prophet or savior.
  • Understand suspiciously, is the belief that someone or a group of people wants to harm or injure themselves, is repeated over and over but not in accordance with reality. For example, assume that everyone is jealous of their abilities.
  • Understanding of chasing, is belief that he feels chased and always followed by others. This notion can be in the form of simple or detailed, and usually in the form of a belief that he is slandered cruelly, disturbed, obstructed, poisoned, or hindered in pursuing long-term goals.
  • Jealousy, is an understanding related to jealousy, for example jealous of his partner. Start to occur frequently suddenly, and disappear after the separation / death of the couple. This type causes severe and physical torture that is meaningful to the partner, and is likely to kill the spouse due to his understanding.
  • Somatic wisdom, is a person's belief that the body or part of his body has an illness, is repeated over and over but not in accordance with reality. For example, he believes that he has a heart disease and dies soon, or has a cancer that is difficult to cure.
  • Nihlisticism, is a person's belief that he has passed away, is said repeatedly but not in accordance with reality. For example, he believes he has died and the people around him are spirits.

Type of understanding depends on the type of schizophrenia suffered. For example in paranoid schizophrenia, the notion of greatness, suspicion of suspicion, and pursuit of understanding are more prominent. Whereas in hebefrenic schizophrenia, nihilistic understanding is more dominant. However, broadly speaking, the types that have been mentioned will be found in people with schizophrenia.
