Medical Video: Save or Toss? Makeup EXPIRATION Dates
As with food, beauty products also have a lifetime. However, cosmetic companies are not required to list the expiration date for each product.
Don't worry, some large companies have now included various information about the production period along with the expiration date on each product package. If you notice, many of the symbols printed on the packaging are related to the product shelf life and letters such as "M" symbolize Month or "Y" for Year. The "12 M" code, for example, means that the product will last for 12 months since the package was opened for the first time. Another with a container symbol with a lid; the open lid symbolizes the product's expiration date that effectively runs after the seal is opened.
Your job as a makeup lover is to know and understand how long your favorite products can be used, even if there is no information on the packaging, to avoid potential irritation and other skin problems.
The following is a simple guide to find out when you should immediately replace your cosmetic equipment.
Mascara
Product shelf life: 2-3 months
When to waste: As soon as you notice your mascara is hard, lumpy, or smells weird.
For matters of mascara, you can't bear it, you have to be able to give up your favorite mascara if it's been months. The use of open-closed mascara is a nest where bacteria gather over time. Maybe this is why you often complain of itchy and reddened eyes, or even to bites.
Tip: Don't share mascara to avoid spreading bacteria. If required, always have a disposable brush applicator available. And remember, don't do the dye twice when applying mascara.
Foundation, concealer, blush on liquid
Product shelf life: 6-12 months
When to waste: If the liquid component is separated, or if the color fades.
Liquid cosmetic products generally use water-based ingredients, a favorite place for bacteria to breed. If left closed, this type of product can last up to yearly, but once the seal is opened, it's better to routinely replace your favorite product every 6-12 months.
Tip: Store your liquid cosmetics at room temperature and in a dry place, keep away from direct heat and damp places.
Lipstick & lip gloss
Product shelf life: 2 years lipstick, 1 year lip gloss
When to throw away: If your lipstick dries and feels tight when applied, or if the lipstick feels very sticky it is unusual. Lipstick and lip gloss contain oil which will start to smell over time.
The content of water in lipstick is fairly low, almost non-existent, but bacterial contamination may still occur due to routine use of products in the lip area. Not to mention if you are among those who like to try various kinds of lipstick testers at makeup counters.
Tip: Try lipstick color does not hurt, but do not ever apply the product directly on the lips. A color test that you think is interesting on the back of your hand, or ask a once-expert applicator to the salesperson.
Powder, solid eyeshadow, solid blush on
Product shelf life: 2 years, 3 months solid eyeshadow
When to waste: Powder and all kinds of solid products will change the texture to become drier and coarse powder
Powdered and solid products contain little water content from botanical extracts which risk becoming an easy target for bacteria to breed. As with mascara, eyeshadow products are vulnerable as a place for bacteria to grow and spread.
Note: blush and eyeshadow in the form of cream must be replaced every 1 year.
Tip: Frequently wash your makeup brush with special soap or over-the-counter antiseptic soap on the market.
Kuteks
Product shelf life: 1-2 years
When to dispose: If the liquid looks lumpy and sticky when applied, or the liquid in the package looks separate and does not mix again after being shaken.
Tips: To prolong the life of the nail polish, use nailpolish thinner.
Perfume
Product shelf life: 8-10 years
When to get rid of: When you notice a perfume smells weird, unusual, or the color of the liquid fades.
Tip: Bright light will oxidize perfumes in bottles, turning chemical components into musty smelling faster. Store perfume in a cool, dark place.
Lotion
Product shelf life: 2 years
When to throw away: if there are changes in color, smell, or texture.
Tip: choose products with pump bottles rather than in containers or tube to avoid the risk of spreading bacteria through the air. The pump bottle makes the contents of the packaging far more durable.
Makeup brush
Product shelf life: annual
When to get rid of: When brush hairs start to tangle irregularly, fall out, or the shape of the hair changes.
Your makeup brush collection, good products drugstore or high-end, will last for years and do not need to replace it often as long as the brush continues to function properly. Makeup foam, for example blush or powder sponge, must be replaced every two times (one time on each side), except blender beauty which proved to be durable and easy to clean.
Tip: diligently wash your makeup brushes every two weeks, or use a special sanitizer brush that you can spray every time you use a brush. For storage, set up a makeup brush with feathers facing up in a container large enough for your brush collection not to change easily due to overcrowding and overlapping.
