1. Definition

What is genital trauma?

Genital trauma is an injury to the male or female genital area. Most of them are bruises (accompanied by swelling) or small wounds that can heal in 3 to 4 days.

What are the signs and symptoms?

If genital trauma occurs due to collision of objects in the scrotum, the symptoms are usually in the form of swelling and pain in the scrotum. The signs may include the scrotum changing color and becoming painful and stiff. Usually the examination for this condition is rather difficult because the patient feels uncomfortable.

Trauma in the form of a broken penis usually produces cracking sounds, the appearance of pain, and is characterized by swelling and bruising, and even usually changes in shape. This injury can also cause a blocked urinary tract.

2. How to overcome them

What should I do?

For minor injuries, clean the injured area carefully using soap and water. Then press for 10 minutes with a sterile bandage to stop bleeding. For swelling, compress with a cold, damp cloth for up to 20 minutes (if tolerable). Contact your doctor if urinating becomes difficult.

When do I have to see a doctor?

Contact a doctor if:

  • The skin is wide open and may need stitches
  • There is external bleeding that cannot be stopped after pressing for 10 minutes
  • Severe pain
  • Difficulty urinating
  • There is blood in the urine
  • In men: the scrotum swells
  • In women: there is bleeding from the vagina
  • In women: injury is from an object that enters the vagina
  • Difficulty standing up
  • If the cause is sexual abuse

3. Prevention

For woman:

  • Keep the vaginal area clean. Use mild water and soap. Rinse thoroughly
  • After using the toilet, cut it from front to back to prevent the spread of fungi or bacteria from the anus to the vagina or urinary tract.
  • Use underwear that can help keep the pubic area dry and not be left in hot and humid conditions. One of the right choices is cotton underwear.
  • Avoid using tight clothing, such as tight panties and jeans. This can increase body heat and make the pubic area moist.
  • Change swimsuits immediately after swimming. Using swimsuits in a wet state for hours can cause the pubic area to become moist.
