Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, is the leading cause of death in the world. Apart from being unhealthy lifestyle, the risk of heart disease can increase because you lack iron in the body. Because, iron has an important role for heart function.

The importance of iron for the heart

This has been proven in a study from Imperial College London and University College London, England. In this research the researchers stated that people who experience iron deficiency are at greater risk of experiencing various heart diseases, such as coronary heart disease.

Coronary heart disease occurs when there is a buildup of plaque in the coronary arteries which causes the coronary arteries to narrow. So that the blood flow cannot reach the heart properly. Coronary heart disease can cause angina (chest pain) or even a heart attack.

While other studies published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology show that iron levels in the body may have a protective effect against heart disease.

The results of the study report that higher iron levels reduce the possibility of developing coronary heart disease.

How can iron deficiency cause heart disease?

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, found that 73 percent of people with heart failure also experience anemia due to lack of iron. Therefore, experts conclude that the two conditions are related.

According to Ezra A. Amsterdam, MD, a cardiologist and medical lecturer at the University of California explained that in cases of severe anemia, the heart tends to pump or beat faster (tachycardia).

Over time, this condition can cause the heart to enlarge and eventually cause heart failure, where the heart cannot pump enough blood properly. Symptoms of heart failure can include fluid buildup, shortness of breath, and very low blood pressure.

Reporting from Detik Health, Dr., Dharmeizar, SpPD-KGH from the Division of Kidney-Hypertension, Department of Internal Medicine RSCM, said that iron deficiency can interfere with the work of the heart.

Iron is an important component of hemoglobin in the body. When experiencing iron deficiency, hemoglobin levels in the body are low, whereas hemoglobin is a part of red blood cells that functions to carry oxygen from the lungs throughout the body.

Iron will provide hemoglobin strength to bind oxygen in the blood so that oxygen can reach the body's cells that need it. Without iron, the body cannot make hemoglobin and produce enough red blood cells. This causes the cells in the body to not get enough oxygen.

This is what ultimately makes the heart work harder to meet oxygen. If it occurs for a long time, the heart will be damaged and increase the risk of heart disease.
