Medical Video: Are Boys Smarter Than Girls?

Men should start thinking a thousand times before doubting the intelligence of a woman at home or office. The reason is even though the size of a man's brain is indeed bigger than a woman's, but that does not make the Adam then smarter and smarter. In fact there may be more intelligent female populations than men. This is because there is actually no strong relationship between brain size and high and low human IQ. Then, what determines human intelligence? And, who is actually smarter: woman or man?

Men and women have different brain structures

Male brain structure

The average volume of a male brain is about 10% greater than that of a female brain. This difference in brain structure seems to be responsible for cognitive performance. Broadly speaking, men do prove superior to women in completing visual-spatial assignments. One example is math skills.

The male brain also has more connections from front to back, which can improve understanding of reason; making them more "happy" and familiar with what is happening around them. This is what makes men more able to take action.

Men have motor skills that are far stronger than women. This ability can be used for activities that require good coordination between hands and eyes, such as throwing a ball or hammering nails.

However, a larger brain does not mean that men are smarter than women's brains.

Female brain structure

Although the size of the male brain is greater than the size of the female brain, the fact is that the hippocampus in women is greater than that of men. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that stores memory, one reason women can see one problem from various perspectives and process a lot of information faster. The female brain is designed to absorb information five times faster than men.

If more male brain connections are connected from front to back, women have more connections from left to right across two parts of the brain. This is the reason women conclude something faster than men. The left side of the brain is related to logical thinking, and intuition. Women also have more "servings"gray matter in the hippocampus area. Gray matter affects women's ability to absorb vocabulary, read and write better.

In the female brain, there are more nerve connections in the area associated with memory and social cognition. So, it is not surprising that women tend to be better at remembering, understanding how others feel or empathizing, and knowing how to respond correctly in all social situations.

In addition, the female brain also produces more serotonin and oxytocin, which may make them calmer, more interested in emotional relationships, and able to maintain focus for a longer period of time. This is also what makes women better at multitasking than men.

Then, who is smarter: male or female?

Before knowing the answer, first know the definition of intelligence is not just about ability in academics, but wider than that. The best way to find out whether a man or woman is smart is to measure a person's ability based on how he acquires and manifests the knowledge he has acquired, apart from the knowledge he has.

In general, a person's intelligence can be measured through an IQ test to find out how well they are in the following four areas: verbal understanding, perceptual reasoning (visual-spatial and auditory), working memory (including short-term memory), and speed of information / question processing.

However, Daniel Amen, MD, author of the book Unleash the Power of the Female Brain mentioned that there were no major differences found in the results of male and female IQ tests, regardless of the difference in brain size. Because how smart someone is sometimes not because the person is taught to be smart. Intelligence is obtained by teaching them to use what they have efficiently.

So, even though there may be more intelligent female populations than men, there is no one faction that is truly superior and smart. Both have intelligence in different things. But specifically there are differences in brain development and competence in certain cognitive tasks between women and men.

Men's brains are proven to be bigger than women. But it's not necessarily smarter, you know!
