Medical Video: Brain cancer could be prevented with olive oil compound

There is no doubt if olive oil does have many health benefits. Some researchers have linked the fat content in olive oil with a reduced risk of obesity and heart disease, as well as an increase in a person's cognitive abilities. Now, new research shows that olive oil can also help prevent brain cancer.

What is brain cancer?

Brain cancer is the growth of malignant or dangerous tumors in the brain. Keep in mind, not all brain tumors are malignant and can be categorized as cancer. Because, there are also benign brain tumors.

Well, the brain tumor itself is the growth of abnormal and uncontrolled brain cells in the part of the brain. These tumors can develop from cells that make up brain tissue, from nerves that go in and out of the brain, and from the protective membranes of the brain and spinal cord.

Brain cancer is divided into two types. It consists of primary brain cancer (accounting for 75% of all cases of brain tumors) whose causes come from the brain, and secondary brain cancer (25% of all brain cancer cases) that arise from other parts of the body and spread to the brain. Brain cancer cannot be avoided but most can be handled if detected early.

Recent research revealing olive oil can prevent brain cancer

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Edinburgh in England found that oleic acid - a monounsaturated fatty acid present in olive oil, was able to stop the activity of proteins that trigger the formation of cancer in brain cells.

Although it can't be said that olive oil in food helps prevent brain cancer, the findings show that oleic acid can support the production of tumor suppressing molecules in cells that grow in the laboratory.

The researchers also added that further research is needed to deepen these findings regarding the benefits of olive oil on brain health. Their findings, published in the Journal of Molecular Biology, show the possibility of therapy by consuming olive oil to prevent the growth of brain cells

Oleic acid in olive oil stops the formation of brain tumors

Oleic acid is a group of nutrients known as fatty acids that stimulate the production of cell molecules. Previous research has shown that oleic acid can inhibit disease-specific activity of proteins.

With this in mind, the researchers investigated how the olive oil compound affected the activity of miR-7 protein, a microRNA that plays a role in suppressing the process of tumor formation. This MicroRNA production is inhibited by another protein called MSI2. If this happens prolonged, it is not impossible that the tumor will form.

To achieve their findings, the researchers tested the effect of oleic acid on extracts of human cells and living cells in the laboratory. As a result, they found that oleic acid inhibits MSI2 activity. Thus, production of miR-7 can take place and tumor growth can be suppressed.

Conclusion

Based on the explanation above, it is known if the researchersneed further research. This is done to ascertain whether olive oil really can be used as a therapy to inhibit the formation of cancer cells that can cause brain cancer.
